The “Library”

Once you’ve created a “Symbol”, it is automatically placed in the “Library”.

If you cannot see your “Library”, click “Window” in the menu bar and select “Library” in the drop-down menu. This will open “Library” window.

I now have many figures on the “Stage” already with different types of “Symbols”.

This you can see from the icons for the name of the “Symbol” in the “Library”.

When you select a “Symbol” on the “Stage” and you open the “Properties window”, you will see the type of “Symbol” it has (1), the size and position on the “Stage” (2).

Here you have the possibility of changing the type and the position and size to fit the selected element on “Stage”.
Please note, if you change this you cannot change the “Symbol” in the “Library”, but you can only edit the selected element, or rather the “authority” on “Stage”.

The rest of the options in the “Properties window” will be discussed in a later lesson. For now, we will go with the “Library”.

Below the “Library” window, we have a number of buttons and a slider.

Clicking on the leftmost button “New Symbol” we open the “Create New Symbol” dialog, and we can create a new “Symbol”, what did you think?

The second button “New Folder” we create a folder where we can add “Symbols”.

It is very interesting to get things a little organized. To place a “Symbol” in a folder, click and drag this icon over the folder. It is also recommended that you also provide meaningful names before you select folders .

To select a folder to open or close, click the down pointing arrow that will appear when there are signs in this folder. Just the same as “Layers”.

Clicking the third button which is “Properties …” your “Symbol Properties” dialog will open, you give the name and type of the “Symbol” and customize it.

The fourth and final “Delete” button, deletes the selected “Symbol” or the selected folder in the “Library”.
Attention! Once removed it is removed, and this cannot be recovered.

Right next to the last button we have a scroll bar.

With this shift, we can display more information about the “Symbol” in the upper part of the “Library” window.

You can sort the “Symbols” in the “Library” by clicking the column headings.

Above this section we have the “Look”. If you want a “Symbol” by name, type in this box. The name or part of the name of the “Symbol”, and click the magnifying glass icon.

Above the “Look” we have a window that shows us an example of the selected “Symbol” in the list.

Above the “Preview Pane” we have a downward-pointing arrow that shows all open “Flash” files when we click on it.
On the right of the button, we have “Current library fix,” and we have the “New library panel” button.

Beside the window title of the “Library” we have a downward pointing arrow with a number of dashes.

When we click it opens a drop-down menu with various options. Some seem obvious to me, others I will discuss in a later lesson.

The option “Select Unused Items” seems to me is something that you’ll use several times, even though you just started working with “Flash”, so I’ll give the explanation about it here.

When you click ” All Symbols” in the “Library”, “Symbols” that are not used also in your “Flash” movie will be selected.
Clicking on the “Delete” button will delete all these.

Doing this will not change size (in KB) of the “Flash” movie that you will publish on the Internet, so here you certainly do not effect the size (in KB) of “Flash” file on your computer.
And two, when there are multiple unused “Symbols” are in the “Library”, it is of little interest to let it stand.

Especially when you begin to search for a particular “Symbol”.
