Loading Media

After we have selected the “New Project” option in the Welcome window, the first thing we should do is to import the various media, including video files, sound files and picture files, which is to be edited using Premiere.

This can be done in several ways.

One way is to click the “File” button in the menu bar, select “Extract media from ..” in the drop-down menu and select the option which you want to use to retrieve the files (1).
A second way is the “Get Media” option under the “Layout” tab which you can use to specify from where you want to retrieve the file, i.e, either from a device or folder (2).
The third way is to use the “Project” option under the “Layout” tab and double-click on an empty spot in the underlying pane.

Make sure that when you want to add a file from a camcorder, a camera, a cell phone, or any other device, it must be connected to your computer.
But, I think you already knew that.

Once the files are inserted into Premiere Elements, they will be displayed in the “Media” button under the “Layout” tab.

Do not panic, you can insert videos, photos and sound into Premiere at any time, in the same way as was just explained.

If you have added a file that you are never going to use, you can remove it by selecting it and pressing the Delete key on your keyboard.
This keeps everything tidy.

In the next step, we will organize all this.

Organization

When we have imported a number of files in Premiere, it might be good to segregate them into different folders. This way, it will be easier for you to find what you want, right!

In order to do this, you need to first select the project under the “Layout” tab.
Click the “New Folder” button (4) below the Project button, give the folder a name, eg photos, and click and drag all files of this type of media into this folder.
The media type of a photo is “Freeze Frame”.I think you already know that.
The media type of sound is “Audio”.
The media type of a videotape, is “Video” or “Movie”.
The media type will be “Video” (A) when a videotape is without sound, and “Movie” (B) when a background score on this video is present. This is an important point to remember, especially when you have many files inserted, so that you can create a folder for each of these media types. You can also create subfolders if you want to further organize a folder.
In order to do this, select the folder in which you want to place a subfolder, and click the “New Folder” button (4) below the “Project” button. Moreover, a subfolder is called a “nested” folder.

Above the project view, we have the “Filter Controls”.
This allows us to filter the list displayed based on the different media types.

At the bottom, we have buttons List View (1), Icon View (2), Go up one level (3) New Folder (4) and Delete (5).

I think this is clear.
Here’s a little explanation for the third button.
When you double-click a folder, you can filter the files and nested folders in this folder.
To navigate to a parent folder, click the “Go up one level” button (3).
In other words, by double clicking on a folder and clicking on the “Go up one level” button , you can navigate between different folders.
But this is purely informative. I do not think you will organize the files in such detail.
But you never know, so don’t say that I haven’t told you.

If you want to change the way the thumbnails are displayed in the project window, right click on the empty space in the project window, select “Thumbnails” in the drop-down menu and click “Small”, “Medium” or “Large” in the list.

If you wish to remove the “Thumbnails” from the project window, select the option “Off”.

If you want this back to give, click the “Off” button again, in the list.

If you want to play a clip in the project view, double click it in the list, and click the “Play” button in the preview window that appears.

Awesome!
