Office 2010 - Excel

Lesson 18: “Range” of cells (4)

18/87 Lessons

Automatic replenishment of cell contents

When we enter recurring information in “Excel”, “Excel” will automatically complete the text by using the “AutoComplete” feature.
For example, in cell A1 I type “cola” and in cell A2 I type “beer”, then When I type the letter “b” in cell A3, Excel will propose the word “beer”. If I agree with this suggestion, I click the Enter key. If I disagree with the content the “Autocomplete” feature proposes, I continue to type further.

However, for “autoComplete” to work correctly, there should be no empty cell in our list. Suppose you leave cell A3 empty and you type a B in cell A4, “Excel” will not “auto-complete”.

If you prefer not to use this feature, you can disable it in the options window. Click the “File” button in the “Ribbon”. Select “Options” and select the “Advanced” tab. In the list, click the check box “Automatically activate complement cell values” so that the tick disappears (uncheck).

A second way is to right-click the cell, and select “From drop-down list.”

This opens a list of typed text to choose from.
For this, the condition is that, there should be no empty cell (s) in the list.

The “AutoComplete”feature only works with text and a combination of text with numbers.

It does not work with numbers, dates and time.

Merging cells and rows

In “Excel”, we have the opportunity to put cells and/or rows together. For this we first select the cells, and click the “Merge & Center” button in the “Ribbon”. This opens a drop-down menu with 4 options. I think this is clear.

This converts all the combined cells into a large cell. We can see the contents of this cell formatting like all other data in “Office” applications.

The “Undo” and “Redo”

In the standard “Quick Access” toolbar, we find the buttons:

  1. “Undo”
  2. “Redo”.

Through the “Undo” we can undo the last command executed. By clicking on the black down-pointing arrow next to this button we can “Undo” up to 100 previous commands. The shortcut for “Undo” is Ctrl Z .

If you want to “Redo” undone actions, click on the “Redo” button. By clicking on the black down-pointing arrow next to this button we can “Redo” multiple actions. The shortcut for a “Redo” action is Ctrl Y .

The “Delete” button

The “Delete” button is found in the “Home” tab of the “Ribbon” under the “Edit” group.

To use “Delete”, first select the cell (s) and click on the “Delete” button. This opens a drop-down menu with several options. I suppose this is all clear.
