Lesson 50: “Charts” (4)

50/87 Lessons

Adding data to a “Chart”

Adding data to a “Chart” can be done in a variety of ways.

I would like to show you two of the easiest ways.

Suppose the month of April has been added to our table, and now we need to include it in our “Chart”.

First select the “Range” for April in the table (E3: E8).

Click Ctrl C on your keyboard (this copies the range).

Select the “Chart”.

And then Ctrl V on your keyboard.

The column with the figures of April are now added to our “Chart”.

A second way is to select the “Chart”, click the blue border around the “Range” in the table, click and drag the edges or corners till the correct columns are selected.

The first way can also be used when the “Chart” is placed in its own “Worksheet”.

Remove Data from “Chart”

Removing data from a “Chart” is as easy as removing the entire “Chart”.

Select the “Series” (1), and click the “Delete” button (2) on your keyboard.

How do you select a “Series” ? Well, you just click on a bar in the “Series”, e.g. the blue bar of the “Chart” (1). This selects the “Series” for April. Or you can click the downward pointing arrow in the “Chart Area” under the “Layout” tab and choose the series that you want to delete (3).

Data will not be deleted from our “Worksheet” but only from the “Chart”.

Adjust Value axis

To change the value axis (vertical axis), we first select them in our “Chart”. Click “Format Selection” in “Format” tab in the “Chart Tools”.

In the “Format Axis”, the default setting for “Axis Options” are “Auto” enabled for the “Minimum” and “Maximum” value, etc.

We can change this by selecting the “Fixed” button and giving a value. Once you have a typed a value, the value axis in the “Chart” changes accordingly.

Alternatively you can change other options as well. The options in the dialog box depend on the type of “Chart” you have chosen.
Click the “Close” button at the bottom of the dialog to confirm the changes

Adjust Category axis

To change the options on the category axis (the horizontal axis), we perform the same operations.

The only difference is that we select the category axis, of course.

The options for the category axis are also dependent on the selected type of “Chart”.
