“Pivot Table” Styles

As mentioned earlier, we find a lot of different styles already formatted in the “Design” tab under the “Pivot Table Tools” in the “Ribbon” .

You can scroll through this menu with the up and down arrows, or you can completely open the menu by clicking the “More …” button at the bottom.

When the button “More …” is clicked, it opens the “Styles” menu and you see that the various preformatted styles, divided into three groups: “Light”, “Medium” and “Dark”.

Use the scroll bar on the right side to scroll through the menu.
When the mouse pointer moves over a style, you see a live example of this in the “Pivot Table”.

To select a style, click on this style.

To remove a style from your “Pivot Table”, click the “Clear” option at the bottom of the “Styles” menu.

To make your own style click the “New Pivot Table Style” button at the bottom of the “Styles” menu.
This opens the “New Pivot Table Quick Style” dialog.

Use the various table elements to determine your style. Each table element fits into a “Range” of the “Pivot Table”. This may be for the entire table, but it can also be, for example, for the Field name.

To format an element, select the element in the list, right-click and choose the “Format Cells” option. This will open the “Format Cells” dialog box with three tabs, “Font”, “Border” and “Fill”. You can use the three tabs to change the layout for the selected element.

Click the OK button when you’re done. In the list of table elements, you see now that the formatted element is in bold.

In this dialog, at the top, we find the name box, so give this style an appropriate name. On the right is an example of the formatted element.

We also have the “Clear” button which we use to delete a table element in the layout. First select the table element and then click the “Clear” button. This removes the formatting for that element.

And at the bottom we have a box that we can check if we want to apply a style as a default on all other “Pivot Tables” which we created in the same “Workbook”.

Click the OK button when you’re done. Your style is now added to the top menu along with different styles under a new “Custom” group.

If you wish to edit or delete this format later, right-click it in the “Styles” menu and select “Modify” or “Clear” depending on what you want to do.
