“Slicers”

Something that is new in “Excel 2010” is called the “Slicers” which we can add to a “Pivot Table”.

With “Slicers” we can apply filters to our “Pivot Table” in a fairly quick and easy way, .

To add a “Slicer” to a “Pivot Table” , select the “Insert” (1) tab in the “Ribbon” and click the “Slicer” (2) button. In the dialog that appears (3) choose the fields that you want to add to the “Slicer” and then click the OK button.

This places the “Slicer” (4) in the “Pivot Table”. To filter out certain data from the table, you only have to click the fields in the “Slicer”. These fields lie one below the other in the “Slicer”. You can click and drag the various fields also. If the fields you want to filter are not among them, hold the Shift key on your keyboard while you click on the fields.

To undo filtering, click the filter icon at the top right of the “Slicer” (5). Through the options in the “Ribbon” (6) we can determine the layout of the “Slicer”. All of this is pretty obvious.

To delete a “Slicer”, highlight it in the “Worksheet” and click the “Delete” key on your keyboard.

If you want to add an extra “Slicer”, first select the “Pivot Table”, choose the “Insert” tab in the “Ribbon” and click the “Slicer” button.

This will again show the “Insert Slicer” dialog with open fields, where you can select which you want to add to the “Slicer”.

Empty cells fill

Depending on the data in your “Pivot Table”, you might want to fill text or zeros when a cell appears to be empty.

To do this, first select the “Options” tab, in the “Pivot Table Tools”.

Click the “Options” button on the left side of the “Ribbon”.

This opens the “Pivot Table Options” dialog.

Select the “Layout and format” tab.

Click the checkbox for “For empty cells show”, so that it is checked.

In the box beside the checkbox, enter a value that you want to be displayed when the cell is empty

Click OK.

If you wish to keep these cells empty again, remove the value we entered in this box. You can not do this by just clicking the checkbox to “de-select”.
