71/87 Lessons

Input message and error

It shoud be easy for the users of our “Worksheet” to enter data.

The first is the input message.
Select the “Range” and click the “Data Validation” button
Select the “Input Message” tab in the dialog.

If this is not checked, click the check box with the text “Show input message when the cell is selected” (1). This gives the message, if a cell from our “Range” is selected (2).
In the top box, give a title (3), for the message (4).
Click OK

A second way to let users of our “Worksheet” know that there is something wrong with the information they enter is , the “error”.

Open the “Data Validation” dialog again.
Select the “Error” tab.
Check the checkbox with the text “Error alert …”.

Here, we give a title and a message.

In the “Styles” we have three possibilities:

  1. Stop”
  2. “Warning”
  3. ” Information”

When we choose “Stop”, a warning window is shown with the “Retry” and “Cancel” buttons.
This option will never allow values that do not meet the requirements.

This is not the case when we have chosen “Warning”.
Here, the user still has the option to enter his own value.

The same applies to “Information”.
The user can still enter their own data.

Invalid data in a validation range

So if we have chosen for a “Warning” or “Information” error style, errors can be made by the users. In order to avaoid this and detect cells with invalid information, first select the “Range” and then click the downward pointing arrow next to the “Data Validation”. Select “Circle Invalid Data” from the drop-down menu. This places a circle around each cell with incorrect data.

To remove the circles again, repeat these steps, and choose “Delete Validation Circles”.

Awesome!
