Lesson 52: The Text group

52/66 Lessons

Inserting a “WordArt”

With a “WordArt” you can add special text effects to your document. For example, a title stretch, skew text display, adjusting text to a preset shape or, a gradient fill can be applied.

To insert a “WordArt” in your document, select the “Insert” tab and click the “WordArt” button.

This opens a drop-down menu with various styles.

Select a style from the menu.  It does not matter what you choose because we can still change it later.

When you’ve selected a style, a window appears, where you can enter text.

If you have first entered text in your document and then selected WordArt, just select the WordArt of your choice.

To transform text which is in a “WordArt” style, first select the text (1), then select the “Format” (2) tab, and then click the “Text Effects” (3) button.
Select “Transform” (4) from the drop-down menu and select a transformation style.

Each style has a pink square block (5) that lets you change the shape and style by clicking and dragging.

You can continue to format the WordArt style, if you wish, by using the options in the ribbon, under the “Format” tab.

Inserting Text Boxes:

Text boxes are a part of the building blocks, which I have already explained in a previous lesson.
The “Text Box” is found in the ribbon under the “Insert” tab in the “Text” group.

When we click on it, a drop-down menu appears with various options.
Click on the text of your choice to place it in your document.
The text box will appear in your document, as it is shown in the preview.

If you do not find anything to your liking, you can still create a text box itself.

Click on the “Text Box” at the bottom of the drop-down menu.
This changes the cursor to a cross.
Click and drag in your document until you’ve reached the right size.

Whether you have chosen a text from the drop-down menu, or you’ve created one yourself, you can start entering your text, once you have inserted the text box.

All text and the background of a text can be formatted

with the help of the “Format” contextual tab, which appears when the text is selected.

Drop Cap:

You see a “Drop cap”, often, at the beginning of a new chapter in a book.
To insert a “Drop cap” first select the paragraph where you want to see the first letter in the page.
Click the “Drop cap” button in the ribbon, under the “Insert” tab.
When we click this we have three options: “None”, “Dropped” and “In margin”.
These seem quite clear, but, perhaps we need to discuss the option whic is at the bottom of the drop down menu, “Drop cap Options”.
When we click it, a dialog box opens where:
1. The position can be determined.
2. A different font can be selected.
3. The height of the point can be determined by the number of lines.
4. The distance from the first letter to the rest of the text can be determined.
Click the OK button, when you’re done with the settings.
