Lesson 53: Footnotes and Endnotes

53/66 Lessons

Inserting a Footnote

If there are any among you who do not know the difference between a note, and an end note, or a footnote, let me explain. An end note is placed at the end of a page, and a footnote is placed at the end of the document.   Both are comments relating to an element from the text.

To create a footnote, first place your cursor in the place you want to insert the footnote. Select the “References” tab in the ribbon, and click the “Insert Footnote” button.

This automatically brings us to the bottom of the page where we can place a comment.

We can add one or more footnotes to a page.
Footnotes are numbered from 1 to …

Inserting an endnote:

Inserting an endnote is done in the same way we insert a footnote, where we just clicked the “Insert Footnote” button in the ribbon. This is quite logical.
The “Insert Footnote” button is located next to the “Insert Endnote” button, and brings us to the end of our document.

Foot-or endnote

To create or to remove a footnote or endnote, select the script in your document, and press the Delete key on your keyboard.

Footnotes and Endnote Options

By default, a footnote superscript is in numbers, and an endnote superscript is in Roman numerals.
We can change these options.

Click on the downward pointing arrow in the “Footnotes” group in the ribbon.

This opens the “Footnote and Endnote” dialog box.

In the first section, “Location”, select the location of the foot-and endnotes.
What’s interesting is the “Convert” button.
This allows us to convert footnotes to endnotes and vice-versa.

In the “Format” section, we can select a type of formatting. Enter your choice, or select a symbol.

Set the starting number.  We can choose to have continuous numbering or we can change the numbering for each section or page.

And then, in the last section, “Apply Changes”, we can determine whether we want these changes for our entire document or only for a section. Of course, you then have different document sections.
Click the “Apply” button when you’re done.

Displaying Footnotes and endnotes:

To display Footnotes or Endnotes in your document, place the mouse pointer over your footnote.
This displays a box, containing the comment that is mentioned in the footnote or endnote.

To create or change a footnote or endnote double click in the document.
This takes you automatically to the remark at the bottom of the page or document, where you can edit it.
Clicking on the button “Show notes” under the tab “References” in the ribbon, also brings you automatically to the bottom, where all comments of footnotes are displayed.
If you have used both foot-and endnotes in your document, a dialog window will appear where you must select whether your footnote area or endnote area will be displayed.

Navigating between footnotes or endnotes :

There are a number of ways to navigate between footnotes or endnotes.
One way is by clicking the “Next footnote” button under the “References” tab in the ribbon.
Click the downward-pointing arrow when you want to navigate to the following endnote or to a previous footnote or endnote.

A second way is to click on the “Select Browse Objects” button at the bottom right of the application window, and then select “Browse by footnote” or “Browse by endnote”.

A third way is to select the “Home” tab in the Ribbon, click the downward pointing arrow next to the “Find” button and select “Go to …”.
This opens a dialog box with three tabs. The tab “Go To…” is selected.
Select the “Footnote” or “Endnote” in the left side of the dialog, and click the “Next” button.
This brings you to the following footnote or endnote.
If you know the number of the footnote or endnote, you can enter it in the space provided and click the “Go” button.
