Office 2010 - PowerPoint

Lesson 5: The Basics (1)

5/59 Lessons

However, we can now do that in the 2010 version.

A “PowerPoint” presentation is a combination of various “Slides” which are used to convey information to third parties.

When we open “PowerPoint”, it will create a “Blank Presentation”.

This presentation consists of a “Slide”.

This “Slide” can be seen on the left side of the window.

In this “Slide”, we have two “Placeholder boxes”.
Although most of us call them “text boxes”, there is a difference.

A “temporary Placeholder box” can contain not only text but also, “Tables”, “Charts”, “SmartArt” graphics, “Photos”, “ClipArt” and “Video”.

From now on I will call a “temporary Placeholder box” as just a “Placeholder box” as this helps my fingers when typing 🙂

You can change the size of a “Placeholder box”.

Just click your mouse anywhere in the “Placeholder box”.
Move your mouse pointer over one of the handles on the edge of the “Placeholder box”.
Your mouse pointer changes into a double arrow.
Click and drag until you’ve reached the right size.

You can move a “Placeholder box”.

To move a “Placeholder box”, hold the mouse pointer over the edge of the “Placeholder box”.
When it changes into a four-arrow (1), click and drag the “Placeholder box” to the desired position.

You can rotate a “Placeholder box”.

Please move the mouse pointer over the “Placeholder box” till the mouse changes to a green circle and, when it changes into a circular arrow (2), click and drag it up or down.

You can remove a “Placeholder box”.

To remove “Placeholder box”, click on the edge of the “Placeholder box” to select it.
This changes the edge of the “Placeholder box” to dots or one line in a solid line.
Now click the “Delete” key on your keyboard.

To add text to a “Placeholder box”, click in the “Placeholder box” and start typing.

We can format the text of the “Placeholder box” at any time.

You can read more about the formatting of text in the next lesson.

You can also add display boxes. More on this in a later lesson.

However, we can now do that in the 2010 version.

The “Layout” (2) button found in the “Home” (1) tab can help us position titles, subtitles, text and content to determine the layout of our “Slide”.

In “PowerPoint” 2010, we have nine different layouts.

By default, the “Slide” that is used when we create a new presentation is a “Title Slide”.

We also have a “Title and Content” slide which includes a “Placeholder box” for the title, and a “Placeholder box” for the content, which may be text or an object .

A “Section Header Slide” allows us to divide the presentation into sections, and features a “Placeholder box” for the section summary and a “Placeholder box” for the section title.

A “Two Content Slide” which has a “Placeholder box” for a title and two text boxes for content or other objects

A “Comparison Slide” which has a “placeholder box” for a title, two “display boxes” for the content and another two “display boxes” above the latter

A “Title Only Slide” which has only one “Placeholder Box” used for the title

A “Blank Slide” – which is blank 🙂

A “Content with Caption Slide”. This slide has a “Placeholder box” on the right side for text and objects. And on the left, another “Placeholder box” for the title, and a “Placeholder box” for the description.

Finally, there is the “Image with caption Slide” which has an “image box”, a title box and a text box where we can describe the image.

“Slide Layout” and the corresponding “Placeholder boxes” will help you maintain consistency between the different “Slides”.

Awesome!
