Lesson 44: Subforms (cont 2…)

44/72 Lessons

Open “Subform” in a new window.

When we design forms, we have the ability to open a “Subform” in a new window.
This may be useful when the “Subform” is not completely visible in the “Form”.
First, select the “Subform” and click the “Subform in New Window” button in the “Ribbon”.

The “Subform” will open in a new window where you can easily set or change the formatting and layout of the “Subform”.

“Tab Control”

Instead of displaying everything on a single page in a “Form”, we can use the “Tab control” in order to spread the information on different pages.
For example, in the previous lesson, we had the main form with the details of the student and the “Subform” with the data of the results.
All this information was displayed on a page.
To view this information across two pages, but only using a form, use the “Tab control”.

First open the “Form” in “Design View”.
Second, create more space under the “Subform” by clicking and dragging the edge of the “Details” section of the main form.

Click the “Tab control” button in the “Ribbon”.

Click and drag in the “Form” at the place where you want the “Tab control” to appear.

This adds the “Tab control” with two default tabs.

Then select all fields in the main form .
Click the “Cut” button in the “Ribbon”.

Select the first tab of the “Tab control”, “Page 19” and click the “Paste” button in the “Ribbon”.

Repeat for all data from the “Subform” by just pasting the data in the second tab “Page 20”.

Now all data from the form and “Subform” are gone, we can move between the tab controls by clicking and dragging them.

Then we give a more meaningful text names to the various tabs.
Select the first tab, click the “Property Sheet” button in the “Ribbon”.
And under the “Other” tab in the “Name” field, enter a title for the tab, eg pupil.
As soon as you hit the ENTER key on your keyboard, this name is listed on the tab.
We do the same for the second tab.
First select the tab, and then in the “Properties window” under the “Other” tab in the “Name” field, enter an appropriate title, eg “result”.
If you want to insert an extra page, click the “Insert Page” button in the “Ribbon”.
First, select the “Tab control” on the “Form”, if this is not selected.
To delete a page, right-click the tab and select “Delete Page” in the drop-down menu.
The page order can be changed using the drop-down menu.

Click the “Save” button in the “Quick Access” toolbar and view your results in “Form View”.
As you can see in the picture below, our “Form” has two tabs now.
