Lesson 54: Frames (2)

54/58 Lessons

Links for framesets

When you use a link for a document in one frame, to open in another frame, you need to set a target for the link.

First select the text or pictures where you want to make a link, type, click and drag to the page that you want to make the link.

And this is important, in the “Target” you determine, in which frame the link should be opened.

If you would look at the source code of the menu page, you will see that the “target” attribute is added to a tag.
The Target attribute identifies the frame or window in which the linked page will be opened.

In the “Target” in the property window, we find our three different frame names again, “mainframe”, “top frame” and “left frame” plus four more.

  1. _blank: then the linked page opens in a new browser window and the current window remains unchanged.
  2. _parent: then the linked page opens in the parent frameset of the frame where the link is contained, and the entire frameset is replaced.
  3. _self: the linke page is opened in the current frame and the content in that frame is replaced.
  4. _top: then the linked document is opened in the current browser window and replaces all the frames.

Frame names are only displayed in the “Target” when a document is edited within the frameset.
When a page is edited in its own window, frame names do not appear in the “Target” and then you enter the names manually.

Maybe another tip:
When you create a link to a page outside your site, you should always use “_top” or “_blank” for the target. This ensures that the page is not displayed as part of your site.

That’s it for Frames.

In the next lesson, we will finally publish our site on the Internet.
