Lesson 29: Color corrections (8)

29/94 Lessons

Levels

Another way to carry out color corrections is by means of the “levels”.
As an example I opened a picture which has a tint over the entire image.
They call this a color cast.
When you view the “Histogram” panel, you can see that only a little or no highlights present in the channels for “Green” and “Blue” (1), and there are hardly any shadows for the channel “Red” (2).We know from previous lessons that for the color white, the value for each color channel should be 255.
However, when we move the pipette (3) on the picture, we see in the “info” panel that the values for white, with these values, yet I think it is white, are R: 253, G: 199, and B: 111 (4).

A solution to correct it is with the “Levels”.
Open the window “Adjustments” and click the “Levels” (5).

In the “Levels” panel, we see three pipettes.
The bottom is for the highlights, the middle is for the midrange and the upper one is for the shadows.
The first thing we do is to adjust the highlights, in other words, whiten the white.
Select the bottom dropper (1), and then a position in the photo (2) to be white.

As you can see in the “Info” panel, the RGB values are adjusted to 253-250-248.
The new values are right next to the old values in the “Info” panel.

Do the same for the midrange.
Select the middle eyedropper, and click a place in the photo should have a gray value, or rather a medium tone. For example, the space under the cabinet.
Do the same for the shadows or dark colors.
Select top dropper, select a dark color and click.
This would be the result.
Of course everything depends on what you have chosen as “Highlight, Midrange” and “Shadow”.

It looks a lot better, If I can say so myself.

What I still need to tell you is that when you perform these operations for each color channel, you will have an even better result.

Just click the downward pointing arrow next to the RGB box, and repeat these operations separately for each channel, red, green, and blue.

Awesome!
