Lesson 90: Drawing and color (2)

90/94 Lessons

Colorize

In Photoshop, we have the opportunity to fill everything with color. You can fill a layer with color, you can fill a selection with color, you can create a mask filled with color.

You can use the “Bucket” tool or the “Gradient” tool, but this not what I really want to demonstrate.

I want to give this image of a hot air balloon, the panda, a pink tinge. When I do this with the bucket, I would lose the finesse, so I use the command “Fill”.

First, I select the part that I want to change the color.

Then I click the “Edit” button in the menubar, and select “Fill” in the drop-down menu.

In the dialog box I select “Color” for “Use:” (1) and I choose a color in the next dialog box that appears. In this case a rose tinge.

In the “Mode” (2), I choose the option “Color”.

When I’m done I click the OK button.

The result is a beautiful pink panda with all details.

The option “Replace Color”
When you want to replace a color in a picture by another color without altering or losing the structure of the photo, we have a function in Photoshop.
This command is called “Replace Color”. What did you think otherwise?
As an example I take a picture of the first balloon flight of my son, the tall one in the middle.

My wife is also in the picture, she keeps a close eye on everything.

Enough personal stuff, we go further.
I’m going to attempt to make the yellow in the balloon a little more lively.
I click the “Image” button in the menu bar.
Select “Adjustments” in the drop-down menu and click “Replace Color” from the submenu.

This opens the “Replace Color” dialog.

The first thing I do is the preview window (1) to display the “Selection” (2). This will show me the selected grayscale. White is selected, black is not selected, do you remember?

Then I click the color that I want to replace in the photo.

Through the pipettes in the top of the dialog (3), I add colors or delete colors from the selection.

Through the Fuzziness slider (4), adjust the indulgence in color difference for the selection.

Once you are satisfied with the selected and the white area in the preview window, you can use the scroll bars “Hue”,”Saturation” and “Brightness” to set the color.

Click OK when you’re done.

Result. The yellow is more yellow.
