“Save” and “Save As”

To save an edited photo, select “File” in the menu bar and click “Save” from the pop-up menu. This will save the edited file under the same name and in the same storage location on your computer.

If you want to save an edited photo, and retain the original, select “File” in the menu bar and click “Save as …” in the pop-up menu.
Do the same thing when you want to save the picture under a different name, and possibly at another location on your computer.

When you click the “Save as ..” option, a dialog appears where you enter a new file name, select a folder where you want to save this, and enter the extension under which you want it saved.
Click the “Save” button when you’re done.

This opens a second dialog box where you can change the picture quality.
The higher the quality the larger the file size in KB.
Click the “Save” button when you’re done.

This saves the image with the specified settings.

Saving a Copy:

The third option in the list is “Save a Copy” it does the same action as the option “Save as”, the only difference being that the copied file is present in the document window, while with the “Save as” option the copy of the file is displayed in the document window.

Save as Template

The fourth option, “Save as template” creates you a template document that you can use later.
This makes it easier to start a new document with the same dimensions and resolution.

Rollback:

By selecting the “Revert” button, the GIMP image is closed, and it re-opens the file.
All changes you have made will be lost.
When there are unsaved changes in the image, GIMP asks you again if you really want the image to be reverted.

If you click the “Revert” button all your unsaved changes in the document are lost.

File Type

In GIMP we have the option of storing the image with different file extensions.
You can enter the name in the box, after typing the name or extension you have selected from a list.
Just click on the plus icon next to the “Select file type” option in the “Save Image” dialog .

I will tell you which one you must select for any purpose.
XCF is the default extension for images and photos you’ve edited, and you are going to edit in GIMP.
This remembers the selections that were made even when the image is closed.
This preserves the layers that were added in the lower pane, along with a few other options.

You can use JPG, PNG, POISON if you want to use the image or photo for the Internet.
Please note that when you save an image in this format, all layers are merged into one layer.

If you want an image to be compressed so that less disk space is occupied on your hard disk, but you still want to retain all the features of the XCF type, select the gzip archive format.

If you later want to mail it to someone who works with Photoshop, then select “Photoshop Image”. This will save the image as a psd file, which is the default extension of a Photoshop file.
Also, by doing this, all the layers used in the image are preserved.
