Opening a document

To open an existing document, click the “File” button in the menu bar of the Document window, and select “Open” in the drop-down menu.
This opens the “Open Image” dialog box (A).
The dialog is divided into three parts.
In left section of this dialog box, we find all the storage locations on our computer (1).
In the middle section, we find the contents of the selected location on the computer (2).
And in section on the right side we see a preview of the location that was selected in the middle section (3).

To open a file we first select the location in the left section.
Then we double-click the file or folder in the middle section.
You have to first double click a folder, and then double click the photo you want to open.

If you are still in the same directory, to open an image, we can add that particular folder to the list of locations in the left section of the dialog box.
Select the folder in the middle section, and click the “Add” button (4).

This places this folder in the list of locations (5).
If you wish to remove a map of this location-list, highlight it in the list, and click the “Delete” button (6). This seems quitel logical to me.

To open a file you select it in the middle section of the dialog box, and click the “Open” button.

This opens a new document window with our image.
This new document window displays the name, number of layers, and the Size (in pixels) in the title bar (1).

By default, you have a horizontal and a vertical ruler (2).
With the help of these rulers we can see how big our image is.

When you move the mouse pointer over the ruler, and you click and drag it, you can add guides (3).
These guides can help you create different items in different layers and it can also align these items properly.
We will discuss more about layers in one of the following lessons.

If you wish to hide these rulers, click “View” in the menu bar and select “Show Rulers” in the drop-down menu. This will uncheck the option in the drop-down menu. If you want to see it later, then repeat this operation.

If you wish to remove the added guides, move the mouse pointer over a phone line, and when it changes into a double arrow with a hand, click and drag it back into the ruler (4).

If you wish to hide the guides, click the button “View” in the menu bar and select “Show Guides” in the drop-down menu.
The option “Show Guides” is a toggle, just like the “Show Rulers” option and will be checked in the list when they are shown, and unchecked in the list when they are hidden.

Below the image we find the “Status bar” (5).

The Status bar gives us the position of the cursor (a), the Zoom Level (b) and the tool (c) that you’re working with.
You can change the displayed position by clicking the down arrow button next to it, which is the same as the zoom level.

Opening multiple documents:

If you want to open multiple files, select all files you want to open in the “Open Image” dialog and click the “Open” button.

This will open all images in a separate document window.

Awesome!
