The New option:

Most of the work which you do in GIMP, will be with photos, the photos that you have taken with your digital camera, for example.

But, we also can create a new blank image.

Just click the “File” button in the menu bar and select “New” in the drop-down menu.
The Keyboard shortcut for this is Ctrl + N on your keyboard.

This opens the “Create New Image” dialog.
The “Create New Image” dialog actually consists of two parts. To see the second part just click the “Advanced” button.

In the upper part is the image size and resolution that have already been filled. GIMP will do this by taking into consideration the dimensions that were set, in the preferences window under “Default Window”.
If you want to change them, click the arrow pointing downward s next to the “Template” box (1) and select a preset size.
If you want to change this manually enter the dimensions in the boxes “Width” and “Height” (2).

If you wish to change the resolution, color or background color, click the “Advanced” button, and change the respective features.

If you have manually changed a number of features, and you want to revert to the original settings, always start a new image with these settings, and then click the “Reset” button.
This will automatically set the values under the “Default Image” category in the dialog and adjust the “Preferences”.

Click the OK button when you’re done.

Creation

A second way to create a new file is with the help of the option “Create”.
Just click the “File” button in the menu bar and select “Create” from the drop-down menu.
This opens a submenu with several options.
You can create a new file from a file that is placed on the clipboard.
You can create a new file of a photo on your camera or an image you scanned.
You can create a new file from a screenshot.
And you can also create a new file with a number of preset values. Let me call these templates.

Here’s an example.
I select “Logos”, and click “3D contour”.

This opens a dialog where we can include the text type, and select a different pattern of the font size, and so on.
All you have to do is click the OK button when you’re done.

GIMP has created a new image for you, which is a logo in this case, with the entered information.

All these different templates have different dialogs with various options.

You should try out all of them.

Awesome!
