Lesson 5: Previous Versions of Excel

5/83 Lessons

Opening files created in earlier versions of “Excel”.

If we open a file created in an earlier verison of “Excel” in “Excel 2007”, it will automatically open in Compatibility Mode.
This can be seen in the “Title bar”.

In compatibility mode, the new features of “Excel 2007” are not available in the workbook.

When you work in compatibility mode, the files that you change can still be opened in earlier versions of Excel.

When you close the file, and your file has used funcions that where not available in earlier versions of Excel, the following message is displayed:

Click “Continue” if these functions are not so important.
Or, click Cancel, and save the file as an “Excel 2007” file.
To save a file as an Excel 2007 file, click the “Office” button – “Save As” and choose the Excel workbook.

If you wish to open a file in a previous version of Excel, you must save it as “Excel 97-2003 Workbook”.

Files from earlier versions have the “.xls” extension.
Files created in “Excel 2007” have the “.xlsx” extension.
