Lesson 21: Formatting cells (3)

Text rotation

Sometimes the label of the title is too long compared to the data in the underlying cells. In ‘Excel”, we have the ability to rotate the text. Click on the “Orientation” (1) in the “Ribbon”.

In the drop-down menu that appears, we have several possibilities.

The first five seem logical to me. Try them out. The sixth option “Format Cell Alignment” opens a dialog (1) where we include the text run (2).

Cell borders

When we click on the “Borders”, we get a whole list of different possibilities

I don’t think these possible options need more explanation

The only thing I must tell you is that you get to choose the best color and border style for the edges in your cells or cell “Ranges”.

Format Cells dialog box

As in “Excel 2007”, “Excel 2010”, provides the opportunity to work with the “Format Cells” dialog boxes.

For this purpose we click on any of the arrows pointing to the lower right, next to the group of names.

This opens the dialog box, where the tab group selected is already highlighted.

The possibilities in the first five tabs are all those you possibly can try and set but, we will go further a bit.

The last tab which is “Protection” is set to be “Locked”.

You also have the option to hide cells.

This option has no effect until you apply to the entire “Workbook”. More on this later.

Once all options are set in the dialog box, click OK to confirm and return to the “Worksheet”.

Format

We use “Format Copy/Paste” to format text and copy background settings

The “Format Copy/Paste” is found in the “Ribbon”, under the “Home” tab.

First select the cell which formatting you want to copy. Then click the “Format Copy/Paste” button in the “Ribbon”. Your mouse pointer changes to a plus sign with a brush.

Then click, or click and drag it across the cell (s) where you want to apply this formatting.

As soon as you release the mouse button, the “Format Copy / Paste” button is disabled.

If you wish to format different non-adjacent cells with this format, you need to double-click the “Format Copy/Paste” button.

In this way it remains active in the “Ribbon” and you can click as many times as you want. The copied formatting will still be applied. To turn the “Format copy/ paste” off, click this button again in the “Ribbon”.
