Office 2010 - Excel

Lesson 24: “Themes”

24/87 Lessons

Apply theme

For those of us who were using “Excel 2007”, this option will be undoubtedly familiar. However, if you are switching from Excel 2003 to version 2010, “Themes” will be new. “Themes” are an easy way to quickly format a “Worksheet”.

At the click of a mouse, we have access to a whole range of professional “Themes” which can be used to significantly format and change the design of your entire “Spreadsheet” .

To apply a “Theme”, we have to “inform” Excel what we want. For example, we can color a “Range” of cells, with any color, informing Excel what it has to paint. This can be done through the “Fill Color” (1) in the “Ribbon”, or by creating a “Table” (this goes a lot faster) and then converting it back to a “Range”.

More about tables in Lesson 26, let me quickly point out how the above can be done in five clicks:

  1. lace the cursor in the “Range”.
  2. Choose the “Insert” tab in the “Ribbon”.
  3. Click the “Table” button.
  4. click the OK button.
  5. Click the “Convert to Range” button in the “Ribbon”.

I’ve also added a graph. More on Graphs in a later lesson, but again, a quick pointer on how to add it in five clicks.

  1. Place the cursor in the “Range”.
  2. Choose the “Insert” tab in the “Ribbon”.
  3. Click the “Charts” button.
  4. Choose the type of graph.
  5. Choose a layout for your graph.

The following is created….

To apply a “Theme” to our “Spreadsheet”, we select the “Page Layout” tab in the “Ribbon” and click the “Themes”. We then move the mouse pointer in the pop-up menu on the different “Themes” to see a live example in our “Worksheet”. If we click a “Theme”, it is applied in the “Worksheet”. Note that both the “Range” as well as the graph in the “Worksheet” will be adjusted.

Change theme

If you want to change a “Theme”, click one of the three adjacent buttons.

  1. Colors
  2. Fonts
  3. Effects

You can create your own “Theme” colors and “Theme” fonts by clicking on the bottom of the list where you find ‘Create New Theme Colors … ” and “New font theme …” (A). For the third option “Effects”, this is not possible.
