25/87 Lessons

Cell

A style is a set of formatting characteristics, such as background color, font, size, etc. The “Styles” command is found under the “Home” tab of the “Ribbon”. To apply a style for a cell, first select the cell or cell range and click the “Cell Styles” in the “Ribbon”.
This unfolds a menu with different “Styles” for titles, background colors, currency and more. Move your mouse over a style to see a live example (1) of this style appear in the “Worksheet”. To apply a style, select the cell style.

When you right-click a cell style and choose “Modify” from the pop-up menu, a dialog box (2) opens where you can see the formatting options to compose a style. Click “Format” and then you can customize the layout for this style.

Custom cell style

To make a new cell style we click the button “New Cell Style” at the bottom of the cell “Styles” menu.

This opens the same dialog box we had seen earleir for a default style.

At the top of the dialog box, in the space provided, we give our new style a name.

Under the name box we see the style of the then-selected cell in the “Worksheet”.

Because I have a blank cell, that I had selected for the “New Cell …” I have all my formatting options by default.

If you already have entered a style, it would be listed in this dialog.

Click the “Format …” button to set the style.

This opens the dialog “Format Cells”. In this dialog, we find 6 tabs on which we can enter all our institutions that we want to apply in our own cell. Enter your settings, click OK and OK again.

When we re-examine the cell styles, we see that this is added to a new group: “Custom”.

Custom cell removal

To remove a custom cell style, reopen the cell “Styles” menu, right click the custom cell style that you want to delete, and select “Delete” from the drop-down menu.

Custom cell change

To create a custom cell style and to modify cell styles, open the menu, right click the custom cell style that you want to change, and select “Modify” from the drop-down menu. This opens the dialog “Style”, where you can change the settings.

Using custom cell in another workbook

To be able to use a custom cell in another “Workbook”, we group them together.

Open the “Workbook” containing the modified cell (1).
Open and select the “Workbook” where you want to use the custom cell (2).
Open the cell “Styles” (3) menu, and click the button at the bottom, “Merge …”.
Selecting “Merge…” opens the “Workbook” dialog box, containing the modified cell (4), and click OK.
Now this style is listed in the menu cell styles, from your new “Workbook”.
