The “Add Shape” button does the needful in two ways. If the selected shape is on the left (1), clicking this button, automatically places the shape after the selected shape.

When the selected shape is on the right (2) clicking this button, gives a drop down menu where you have the choice of placing the new shape before or after the selected shape.

The quickest way to delete a shape is to select the “SmartArt” graphic and click the “Delete” key on your keyboard.

To change the order of the shapes, do the following:

Select your text in the text window for the shape, click the “Cut” button in the “Ribbon” or click Ctrl X on your keyboard to remove the shape.

Place the cursor on the text in the text window where you want to place the earlier removed shape and then click Ctrl V on your keyboard.
