The usage of styles

The style of a document is determined by a number of factors.
The font, colors, background, etc., all determine the style of the document.
In Word 2010, we have a number of styles which are already formatted.
These are called “Quick Styles”, and we find them under the “Home” tab, on the Ribbon.
“Quick Styles” provide us with a number of pre-formatted headings and subheadings.
To quickly apply a style, place the cursor in a paragraph, and move the mouse pointer over a particular style. The different styles have the “Live Preview”option.
Click the style, when you have found a suitable one.
You can apply different styles to different titles, subtitles, and paragraphs.
Click the “More” button, to view more options.

Clicking on the “Change Style” button gives us the option of changing the Style, colors, and the font. A new feature in Word 2010, is the “Paragraph spacing” option and the ability to add text effects to a single style.

Changing the Style:

Let me start by talking about adding a text effect to an existing style.
The first thing you need to do is to add an effect to the text. In the example below I have taken one of the standard effects and I have added a reflection to it.
Then I select the text (1).
I now right-click an existing style (2) and, in this case, I select “Heading 1” and, choose “Update Heading 1 to match selection” (3) from the drop-down list.

The “Heading 1” style is now nodified according to the various effects, and can easily be applied to various texts in the document.

The only thing you still need to do is to select the text in the document, you want to apply the style to , and then click this Style on the ribbon.

Clicking on the button “Change Styles”, gives us the option to change the Style, colors, font and paragraph spacing.

When you select a different Style, the various “Quick Styles” can also change.
With a few clicks, we can completely change the layout of our document.

The advantage of the “Paragraph spacing” option is that you can apply the “Paragraph spacing” to the entire document, whereas, in the 2007 version you had to do this, separately, for each paragraph.

When we insert a theme, we even have the option of formatting our document even more.

Just click the “Page Layout” tab on the ribbon.

Then click “Themes”.

The various themes include a “Live Preview”.

Should it be that you did not find the style you want, you can create your own style.
You can read how to do this in the next lesson.
