Lesson 59: Citations & Bibliography (2)

59/66 Lessons

Placeholder:

We use a Placeholder for a citation, if we want to enter the full source of the information later.
This allows us to continue typing without first having to go through all the steps to add a citation.
Select the location in your document where you want to insert the Placeholder.
Click the “Insert Citation” button under the “References” tab in the ribbon, and select “Add New placeholder” from the drop-down list.

This opens a dialog box where we can enter the, preferably applicable, name for our placeholder.
Click the OK button in the dialog box when you’re done.
The placeholder is inserted in your document, and this is also added to the gallery and it is also added to the list in the “Source Manager”, which we have seen in the previous lesson.

Editing Placeholders:

When we have added placeholders to our document, we must still fill them later.
Just click the “Manage Sources” button under the “References” tab in the ribbon.
This opens the “Source Manager” dialog box.
In the “Current List” section, you can see the used “placeholders” in your document.
Select it and click the “Edit” button.
This opens the “Edit Source” dialog box.
These are the same actions, as in the previous lesson, “Adding a new resource.” So I will not explain this again.

Click OK when all the information is accurate.
Note that in the “Source Manager” dialog box, the question was changed to a checkmark.

Changing the data source:

Source data can be modify in various ways.
One is to select the citation in your document, click the downward pointing arrow that appears, and select “Edit Source” from the drop-down menu.
This opens the “Edit Source” dialog box.
Enter your changes and click the OK button.
Word 2010, will warn you that this source already exists in your document, and it will ask whether you want to update this.
Click “Yes” if you wish to change it, or “No” when you do not want to. Click “Cancel” if you want to undo this change.

When you have selected the option, “Yes”, all citations referring to this source, are adjusted.

A second way to change the data source, is by clicking on the “Manage Sources” button in the ribbon.
In the dialog box that appears, select the source in the left or the right window, and click the “Edit” button.

Removing all sources:

To remove a source from our list, click the “Manage Sources” button in the ribbon.
In the dialog box that appears, select the source you wish to remove from the list on the left, and click the “Delete” button.
Keep in mind that when you delete a source, it is gone for good.

Sources which have been used in the document, and therefore, are in the right window, cannot be removed.

Inserting a Bibliography:

To insert a bibliography in your document, click the “Bibliography” button under the “References” tab in the ribbon.
This opens a drop-down list of pre-formatted bibliographies.
To insert a bibliography in your document, click it in the drop-down menu.

Removing a Bibliography:

To delete a bibliography of our document, click to select it.
This displays three dots to the left of our bibliography.
Click on the dots so that the entire bibliography is selected.
