Lesson 63: Hyperlinks

63/66 Lessons

Creating Hyperlinks:

A hyperlink is not necessarily a link to a page on the Internet, it can also be a link to another page in the same document or another document or even another file in another application.
The most common hyperlink is the one where you enter an Internet address.
Word will automatically create a hyperlink for this, once you hit the space bar or press the Enter key on your keyboard.

In order to follow this hyperlink, you need to press the Ctrl key on your keyboard. If you don’t want to do this, navigate to the backstage view and select “Options.”
Select the “Use CTRL + click to follow hyperlink” check box. This is under the “Advanced” tab.

Creating Hyperlinks from text:

To create a hyperlink from text, select the text and click the “Hyperlink” button under the “Insert” tab in the ribbon.
The text you had selected is displayed in the upper section (1) of the dialog box.

On the left, we have several “Link to” options.
By default, the first option is selected.
Depending on which option is selected here, the middle portion of the dialog will change.
In the above image, the “Existing File or Web Page” option is selected, so recently viewed Web pages can be seen when we use this button.
This gives us the option to choose an address from among the last viewed pages on the Internet.
We can also insert a web address in the “Address:” (2) box.

When you click on the “Screen tip” button, you can enter the information that is to be displayed when the mouse pointer moves over the link in your document.

If you have entered the Hyperlink, click the OK button.
The color of the hyperlink text in your document is now changed, and is underlined.

Creating hyperlinks to other files:

We also have the option of creating a hyperlink to another file on your computer.
To do this, first select the text in your document, and click the “Hyperlink” button in the ribbon.
This displays the “Insert Hyperlink” dialog box .
On the left side, the “Existing File or Web page” is already selected, which is good.
Besides the “Look in:” click the arrow pointing downwards, and navigate to the file you want to link it to.

Select the file from the list.
If you wish you can enter a “Screen tip” for this link.
Click OK when you’re done.

Removing a Hyperlink:

To remove a Hyperlink, we first select the hyperlink text.
Then we click the “Hyperlink” button in the ribbon.
This displays the “Insert Hyperlink” dialog box, again.
Click the “Remove Link” button.

A second and, perhaps the fastest way, is to right click on the hyperlink in your document, and select “Remove Hyperlink” from the drop-down menu.
