Folder Manager

When we opened Picasa for the first time, we were asked if we wanted to scan all the folders on our computer, or just a portion thereof (see lesson 1).

We can do that at any time.

Just click the “Tools” button on the menu bar and select “Folder Manager” in the drop-down menu.

This opens the dialog “Folder Manager”, what did you think?

On the left side of the dialog, we find all the folders on our computer.

On the right side of the dialog we have three options for scanning different folders.

The first option is “Scan Once”.

This will scan the folder once for pictures, even if we change the contents of this folder later, it changes nothing in Picasa.

The second option “Remove from Picasa” will never scan photos from this folder in Picasa. This does not mean that this directory will be deleted from your computer.

The third option “Scan Always” will automatically scan this folder and new photos are added to this folder in Picasa.

To add or remove a folder from Picasa, select the folder on the left and make a choice on the right side of the dialog.

Depending on the selected option, an icon associated with the option appears next to the folder.

This is useful because it clearly tells us which directories are scanned, and which are not.

You can set this option for a folder at any time.

Manually add photos

Another way for the images to be added is the manual way.

Just click the button “File” in the menu bar and select “Add File to Picasa.”

In the dialog that appears navigate to the location on your computer where the files you want to add are located.

Select one or more files that you want to add, and click the “Open” button.

Picasa will automatically add all selected photos to the library in a new folder.

The name of this new folder will be the same as the name of the folder from where your photos are imported. Possibly you can later change this folder name by right clicking in the folder list of Picasa and selecting “Edit folder description.”

Of camera

We have the ability to directly add pictures we took with our camera to Picasa.

The first requirement is that the camera is connected to the computer, and the second requirement is that this camera is on.

Click the “Import” button in the toolbar.

This opens the “Import”.

Under normal circumstances, the Picasa photo device is found, if this is not the case, click the button “auto detect”, and make a choice in the drop-down menu.

Automatically all the pictures on the photo equipment are loaded and displayed in mimiature in the dialog box on the left.

If you wish to import all the photos, click the “Import All” button.

If you wish to import only the selected photos, click the “Import Selected” button.

To selectively pick pictures, select each picture by clicking in the thumbnail view.

Hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard when you want to select multiple non-adjacent images. Hold the Shift-key on your keyboard when you want to select multiple adjacent images.

To exclude photos from import, right click the thumbnail and choose “Exclude File” in the drop-down menu.

An icon of a circle with a red cross appears both on the thumbnail and the excluded image as in the example.

You can navigate between photos by clicking the thumbnail or clicking the “Next slide” and “Previous slide” buttons. If you want to rotate photos, then we do that with the “Rotate Left” and “Rotate Right” buttons.

If you have finished selecting the pictures, and you have the “Import All” or “Import Selected” button clicked, a second screen appears.

In the first box, you give a name to the new folder.

In the second box, you determine the position where the photos are going to be stored on your computer by clicking the “Browse” button.

You may enter some information in the next two boxes, but not necessarily, these are optional.

Click the “Finish” button when you’re done.

From the window that appears in the lower left corner, you can see the progress of importing of photos from your camera to Picasa.

The new folder is added to the Picasa library as well as on your computer in the location you specified in the second window when you’ve imported the photos.

For the record, that first picture is not an animal from the zoo, this is my son, at least that’s what they have me believe.

Awesome!
