Lesson 43: Show 37: Combining-movie and show soundtracks

43/65 Lessons

Sometimes, it may be the case that your movie contains sound and you want this to be played in your show, after the music from the soundtrack.
In this lesson, we specify more details about how you can combine these.

New show

  • Create a new show titled “Show 37_Maastricht”. Click [File]> [New show] change the [Show Title], and retain the aspect ratio at 4:3. Click [Create].

Title slide

  • We make the first slide a title slide. We set the duration to 4 seconds and the transition time to 2 sec. Right click on the slide list and select [Insert]> [Title Slide] from the popup menu.
    In [Captions]> [Caption Settings] enter the following in the text box

Maastricht
2010

Use the following settings for the text:

[Font] = Arial Black,
[Size] = 30,
[Bold],
[Color] = dark blue, RGB = 7/61/255,
[Text Effects]

[Fly in] = grow left [Normal] = wave [Fly out] = shrink right,

[Center alignment]
[Position] = 50 x 50,
[Character spacing] = 150,
[Line spacing] = 125.

Setting the Background

  • We set a gradient as a background. To do this we go to [Slide]> [Background] and select the box [Override backgound for this slide show]. We select the radio button, [Gradient] and then select [Edit Gradient].
    A window opens where we can now select a gradient. We select [Presets] = Metal and [Type] = Rectangular and then we click on the 2nd last box. Click [OK] and close this window and click on [OK] to close the [Slide Options] window.

Photos and movies on the slide list

  • We select all photos (11 nos.) from Lesson 37 and drag them to the slide list as slides, and not as layers. There are several ways to do this. One is to right click on a picture and then select [Add to Show All Files].
  • From Exercise 37, we select the movie “2010-02-16_13-Maastricht-carnival.ASF” and drag it behind the 2nd photo in the 4th slide.

Randomly selecting Effects and transitions

  • We select the effects and transitions smoothly on a random basis. Select all the videos on the slide list using (Ctrl + A) except the title slide and right click on a photo. Select [Randomize]> [Randomize Motion Effects] and [All Effects] from the popup menu. This gives all images a different effect.
    Right click once again and select [Randomize]> [Randomize Transitions]. This places different randomly selected transitions in the show.

Trimming videos

  • We now trim our movie a little. We select [Layer]> [Video Settings]. We then click [Trim Video]. In this case we trim a piece at the end that is not being used. To determine the correct endpoint, we first roughly select the endpoint and then precisely define this using the refinement arrows. Result: [Video Ending Time] = 32.406. Click [OK].
    We must not forget that the duration of our slide should also be adjusted. Thus we click the button, [Sync Slide Time].
    Click [OK].

Adding Music

  • Now we add music. Drag the mp3, “15_John Woodhouse_The CD1_Carnival-The Story Of Venice” to the soundtrack. Its better if you do it in the [Timeline]. Using the [Ctrl] key we place this music track so that the end equals the duration of the show.

Soundtrack and movie sound settings

  • Now there is a small conflict. The movie has its own music and there’s music in the show. This creates a cacophony. We will now mute the show music when the movie track is being played and we will transition smoothly between the two with soft transitions (fade in / out).
    For this double click on the [Soundtrack] and in the [Show Options]> [Music] tab specify the following settings:

Click [Done].

Saving the Show

  • Save this project now under the name “Show 37_Maastricht”.
    Click [File]> [Save As], select the appropriate folder using the explorer and change the [Name] if necessary.

Creating an EXE product

  • We now want to create an “EXE” file. Click the [Create Output] button in the toolbar at the top. In the window that opens, select [PC Executable]. In the popup menu, specify the settings as follows:

[Menu] Tab:
[Title] = Maastricht 2010,
[Layout] = Thumbnail One Center,
[Aspect] = 4:3 TV,
[Theme] = background, see figure

  • In the [Shows] tab only set the title with the [Set Menu Title] option. Set it to “Maastricht”.

  • In the [Shows] tab you can also change the image that is being used as a thumbnail. Click [Set Menu Thumbnail] and select a photo from the show and click [Apply Selected Slide]. Click [OK] to close this window.

  • Now click on [Create] and place the show in the correct folder on your PC and give it the correct name. The movie will be created. The result can then be viewed using Windows Media Player.
