Lesson 46: Show 40: Alpha – Transparency type masks

46/65 Lessons

Here we have 3 examples where we work with the “Alpha Transparency” type of masks.

New show

  • Create a new show titled “Show 40_Alpha Masks”. Click [File]> [New Show] change the [Show Title], and retain the [Aspect Ratio] at 4:3. Click [Create].

1st Example

Photos inserted as layers

  • In the first example, we use 3 photos. Select the “Young lady”, “Script_007” and the “Cloud” photos. Drag them to the side list, but as layers.

Scaling the Layer

  • Double-click the slide and select [Layers]> [Layer Settings]. Select the layer [Schrift_007] and set the [Scaling] to [Fill Frame].

Organizing Layers

  • These layers are organized in this order: [Cloud], [Young lady], [Script_007].

Mask

  • The [Cloud] is used as a mask layer. Select the [Masking Layer] check box and select the [Mask type] as [Alpha (Transparency)] using the dropdown menu.
  • Click [OK] and close this window and you will see this result on the slide list.

2nd example

The second example is one in which we have a black colored layer.

Inserting Layers

  • Select “Background_08” and “Gentleman” from Lesson 40. Drag it to the 2nd slide.

Scaling Layers

  • Double-click the slide and select [Layers]> [Layer Settings] and set the [Scaling] to [Fill Frame] for both the layers.

Adding an Extra solid layer

  • Now we add a solid layer. Click the [+] icon in [Layers] and in the popup menu, we select [Add solid color]. In the next screen we set the color with the color wheel to black (RGB 0/0/0). Click [OK] and it is created as a layer.

Placing Layers in order

  • The layer order should be: [Solid 1], [Gentleman], [Background_08]. If not, place them in that order.

Mask

  • We are going to use the [Solid 1] layer as a mask layer. Select the [Masking Layer] check box and select the [Alpha (Transparency)] as the [Mask type]. Nothing has been changed, exactly.

Zooming and moving layers

  • We still apply the same layer, [Solid 1], to get the right effect. Set the [Zoom] to 80% and the [Position] to -7.25 x 6.35. In [Effects]> [Motion Effects] we set both the start and the end position of the [Rotate] slider to 20.
  • Click [OK] and then you see the following result with the use of this mask. The gentleman is only seen through the mask and the background fills the rest of the slide because it was not linked to the mask.

Third example

Now here’s another example with a solid layer in which we also use a vignette.

Inserting Layers

Select the “Background_05 and the ” Young Lady” photos and drag them to slide 3 as layers.

Adjusting Layers

  • Double-click the slide and select [Layers]> [Layer Settings]. Set the [Scaling] to [Fill Frame] for both layers. The layer [Young Lady], is placed at [Position] = 0 x -23.

Adding an extra layer

  • We are now going to add a solid layer again. Click the [+] icon in [Layers] and select [Add solid color] and select the color black from the color wheel i.e, (RGB 0/0/0). Click [OK] and it is added as a layer.

Organizing Layers

  • The layer order should be: [Solid 1], [Young Lady], [Background_05]. If this is not so, place the layers in this order.

Mask

  • We are going to use the layer, [Solid 1], as a mask layer. Select the [Masking Layer] checkbox, and then select [Alpha (Transparency)] as [Mask type].

Changing the Mask Layer

  • Once again, we adjust the mask layer to get the right effect. The [Position], is changed to 7.5 x 6 and in [Layer]> [Editing] we select [Vignette] and click on the [Vignette] button. We set as the [Vignette Size] to 60.5.and now we’re ready. Click [OK] and again [OK] to close everything.

These are 3 examples with a transparent mask.

Saving the Show

  • Save this project. Click [File]> [Save As] and select the correct folder using the explorer and change the [Name] if necessary. Click [Save].
