Lesson 6: Drawing in SketchUp (2)

The “Eraser” toolimage1

We already talked about removing lines in the previous lesson.
If you wish to remove a line, right-click and select “Erase” from the drop-down menu, but we have another option for this, namely the “Eraser” tool.

If you wish to remove a line select the eraser tool, and click the line you want to delete.

With the eraser tool, we can not remove fills, but you remove a line, or rather an edge of a plane and it automatically removes the padding (1) of a plane.

A second way to delete a line, is to select the line with the “Select” tool (2), and then click Delete button on your keyboard. In this way also, the padding, if any, is automatically deleted.

The “Polygon” tool

We use the “Polygon” tool to draw polygons.

The number of angles that we wish can be typed in the VCB box.

To draw a polygon, we first select the tool in the tool bar.

Again we can draw in two methods.

Drag and drop, or  the correct way, I think, click – move – click.

Click in the drawing area where you want to place the polygon. With the first click you determine the center of the polygon.

Move the mouse pointer. It determines the radius.

And click again to place the polygon.

By default, a polygon has six sides.

To change this, type the number of sides followed by the letter s, and then the Enter key on your keyboard.
If you wish to change the size of one side, then type the size, eg 200, and click Enter.

Just to summarize. I want to draw a pentagon with one side with the dimension of 2 meters, that is 200 cm.

First, I select the Polygon in the tool bar.

I click once in the drawing area and move the mouse pointer.

I type 5s and click Enter. This gives me a polygon with 5 sides.

I type 200 and click Enter. This makes one side as 200 cm.

You can change the size and number of sides always with another number, whether or not followed by typing the letter s.

SketchUp will always adjust the polygon.

If you have deselected the polygon, or you have drawn another object, you can still change the size and number of sides of the previously drawn polygon.

To do this, right click the edge of the polygon and select “Object Properties” in the drop-downmeu.
This opens the “Object Properties” dialog where you can change the size in the “Radius” box and the number of sides in the “segments” box sides.
The maximum number of sides is 999.
