Word sets a minimum value in between the border and the text, we can increase this distance:

  • First we mark the paragraph for which we want to provide a border
  • click on “Format” menu in the toolbar
  • click on “Borders and Shading”
  • the “Paragraph borders and shading”  dialog appears
  • In this dialog, we get a number of options that are not at our disposal in “Tables and Borders” toolbar
  • In the ‘edges’tab , you can set the line type, color and thickness of the desired frame.
  • click the Options button to select the desired spacing between text and frame
  • In the “Page Borders” tab, you can find the different options for setting the page margins
  • In the ‘Shading’ tab, you can choose the desired pattern
  • Click Ok if you are happy with the desired settings.

Borders around a paragraph without indentation are always slightly wider than the layout.

The larger the distance between the frame and the text, the greater part falls outside the type area.

To solve this problem, let the paragraph maintain the same distance of left and right indentation:

  • select the paragraph
  • click on “Format” toolbar
  • select “Paragraph”
  • give the same value for the boxes left and right indent
  • click OK
  • click on the ‘Framework’ in the toolbar Tables and Borders’

the result is a lot better.
