Lesson 6: Text (1)

Insert Text

Adding text in Dreamweaver is as easy as adding text in Microsoft Word.

Place your cursor at the location in your document and start typing.

To start a new paragraph, click the Enter key on your keyboard.

To start a new line, click the Shift + Enter key on your keyboard.

To format the text, we can do it through the “Text” tab in the Insert or through the properties window.

To format text, select it in the document by clicking and dragging and click, for example, the “Bold” button in the Insert or the properties window. It does not matter what you choose.

To choose a different font, click the downward pointing arrow next to the “Font” box in the properties window, which opens a list of different types.

As you notice, this list consists of several groups of font combinations.

With Font combinations, we determine how the text is displayed on your web page in a browser.

For example, there is the combination “Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif”.

If you have you selected it already, the browser will first see if the font “Verdana” is installed on the computer of the visitor.

Is this not the case, then it will look for the font “Arial”, if this is not installed, it will look for the font “Helvetica”, if it does not find this, it will look for the font “sans-serif” and it finds this is not the font of the text in the browser according to your visitor’s browser preferences.

It is therefore important that you choose a combination of fonts that you think that will be installed on the computer of the visitor, for the best possible display of the layout of your website.

Set Fonts

If you can not find the font combination that you desire, you can always combine them.

Just click the downward pointing arrow next to the box “Font” in the properties window and select “Edit Font List …” in the drop-down menu.

In the box at the bottom right, select the font that you want to add to your combination and click on the double left pointing arrow (<<).

If you want to add a font that is not installed on your computer, just type in the box under the list of installed fonts and click the double arrow pointing to the left.

This can be useful when working on a Mac and want to add a font for Windows only.

Click the OK button when you’re done.

Your combination is now added to the list.

But, again, if I choose to work with the newly created combined font to make my courses, there would be very few of you who can see my pages the way I want you to see.

I do not think many of you have the fonts “Adler”, “Chiller” or “Broadway” installed on your computer.

White space between characters

In HTML, and that is where the source code from our page exists, there can be only one space between marks. If you want to add more spaces between characters, you need a nonbreaking space. To insert multiple spaces between characters, click the Ctrl + Shift + Space on your keyboard.

You can also change the preferences in Dreamweaver which automatically fix spaces that are added in a document.

Click on the “Edit” button in the menu bar and select “Preferences” from the drop-down menu.
Click the option “Allow Multiple Consecutive Spaces”.

More about space between different regions, when I talk about CSS.
