Saving

When we have been working on our diagram for some time, we can save all the changes that we’ve made.
This can be done in various ways.
One way is to click on the “File” tab in the “Menu bar” and select “Save” from the drop-down menu.
A second way is to click on the “Save” button in the “Standard toolbar”.
And a third way is to use the Ctrl + S keyboard short cut.

Whatever you do, when you save the file for the first time, the “Save as” dialog box opens.
Navigate to the location on your hard drive where you want to save the file, give the file a name and click on the “Save” button.
The name you’ve just given to the document is now listed in the “Title bar”.
To close the file you just saved, click on the “Close Window” button at the top right-corner of the “Menu bar”.
When the “Getting Started with Microsoft Office Visio” window opens, you will see the newly saved file displayed in the right portion of the window under the “Recent Documents” section.

If you want to re-open the file, you can just click on that particular file in the “Recent Documents” list in the “Getting Started with Microsoft Office Visio” window, or double-click it in the folder in which it is saved.

Save as

We use the “Save as …” option when we want a copy of an existing file to be stored, or when we want to save a file under a different extension.
The first seems quite clear to me, and the second one is used when we want to share it with others who don’t have Visio.
Those who don’t have Visio, cannot do anything with a file that has a .vsd extension, which means that it is a Visio file.
They can not view or open it.
So it must be saved under a different extension.

This can be done by clicking on the “File” tab in the “Menu bar” and selecting “Save As” from the drop-down menu.

In the dialog box that appears, you can specify a different name for the file, if you want, you can select another location where the file is to be saved , and most importantly, you can select a different extension.
Just click on the arrow pointing downwards, next to the “Save as” option, and select the required extension from the drop-down menu.
As you can see, we have several options.
You can save it as a picture when you select jpg, gif, png etc.
You can also save it as a pdf file, an AutoCAD file, or even a web page.

There are lots of options.
So if someone says that he is not able to open your file, then you know what to do.

Awesome!
