Adding Text:

You can add text to your project in various ways.
One way is to click the “File” button in the menu bar, select “New” from the drop-down menu, and click on “Title” (1).

A second way is to click the “New Item” button in the “Project” pane (2).
And a third, and perhaps most common way is to click the text icon at bottom right hand corner of the monitor (3).

However you do it you get the following picture.
Let me first discuss these different components.

On the right we have the “Text” pane.
The “Text” pane is divided into three parts.
In the first part we find the “Text Options” (1).
In the first box, in the first row of the character options we select the font.
In the second section of the first row, we select the style for the font, i.e, bold italic, etc.
“Save Style” can be used when we have a set style have that we want to use repeatedly. Clicking this button, will open a dialog box will appear with the option of giving the style a name. This new homemade style will be added to the list of text styles.
On the second row we have a number of buttons, however, that can be found  in any text application.
The first button is used to change the text size. The second button, is used to determine the line spacing, and the third button, is used to determine the distance between the letters.
The following three buttons are related to the alignment of the text.
With the last three buttons we can make the text bold, italic or underlined.

In the second part of the “Text” pane we find the various text styles (2).
To apply a style from the list to the text in the monitor pane, you only need to click the style, in the pane. The text on the monitor must of course be selected. If the entire text box selected, all text in this box will be adjusted, and if there is only one part of the text selected, only this section will be adjusted.
To select a part of the text double click the box with the Selection tool. This is the first tool in the tool bar (4).

And in the third part of the “Text” pane we find the various text Animations (3).
A text animation can be applied only when the text is of only one line, and text consisting of multiple lines of text animation may NOT be used.
To add an animation to a text to highlight the text, select the animation, and click the “Apply” button.
To delete text animation select the text box and press the “Delete” button.

In the middle, we find the tool bar (4).
At the top, we have the selection tool.
Below that we have the text tool. We use the text tool to add, edit, delete or add text to a text box.
Besides these we find four forming tools. The rectangle tool, the Ellipse tool , the rectangle tool with rounded corners and the line tool.
All these seem quite clear.

Below that we have the “vertical center” and “Horizontal center” buttons. Clicking these buttons will align the text vertically or horizontally in the monitor pane.

And finally we have the “Color Properties”.

On the left side of the monitor pane, we have two frames and the text box (7).
The outer frame (5) is what is called the “Safe Action Margin”.
The inner part is the “Safe Title Margin” (6).

These safety margins only apply if you make a film for television.
When you make a movie to play on your TV, the outer edges are cropped. It is called Overscan. The amount of the cut away portion is not the same for each TV. So if you want to be sure that your headings and actions fit into the area displayed on most televisions, make sure that the text falls within the safe title margin and all other important elements are within the safe action margins.

When you make a film for the Internet or on a CD, these safety rules do not hold because of these cater to  the full image.

In the text box (7), we place our text, and also the shapes that you’ve draw n using the four tool shapes.
We adjust the size of the text box by clicking and dragging the blocks on the edge of the text box.

We move the text box by selecting it with the Selection tool and clicking and dragging it into position.

When we add a title, it is automatically placed in its own video track.
The only thing you have to do is start typing, and to create it.

By default, the text on the first clip in the project is superimposed. The title can also be placed in an empty area of just the timeline without the underlying video.
Just click and drag the text into a blank area of the timeline, or drag the underlying video clip in an empty part of the timeline.

If you want to change this later, double click the title in the Timeline to open it in the Monitor pane.
