What is the SmartScreen Filter?

The SmartScreen Filter protects you from all the extensive threats on the Internet.

These threats may be attached in hyperlinks in e-mails from your bank, certain search results, or even harmful advertising.

You would not know that there is a threat. The internet is filled with scammers who just want to earn something.

The SmartScreen Filter lets you browse safer. If you are a target of such attacks you can evade them with this tool.

The SmartScreen Filter combats these threats with a number of advanced tools.

The SmartScreen Filter will warn you when it senses there is something wrong with the site you visited.

If there is a threat it will warn IE9 that the site is suspicious and blocked.

You can turn the SmartScreen Filter on or off.

By Default it is enabled.

You can use the on or off function by pressing the “Tools” button (1), choose “Safety” (2), and clicking on “Turn off SmartScreen Filter” or “Turn On SmartScreen Filter” (3 ).

In the dialog that appears, choose the option you want to set, and click the OK button.

When you’re on a site that is unsafe, IE9 shows a full page in red with a warning window. You cannot miss it.

In the warning dialog you have the ability to navigate to your Home page, or proceed anyway, to the unsafe site according to the IE9.

Just click the last link “More information”, and then click “Ignore and continue.” Select last option only if you are 100% sure of the site, otherwise it is certainly not recommended.

If you have landed on a site that you think is not secure, then you have the option to check or report them as unsafe website.

Just click the “Tools” (1) button, choose “Safety” (2), and you click “Check This website “(3).

In the second case, choose “Report Unsafe Website” (4).

This last option takes you to a page where you must fill out a form.

You of course cannot just register a site in “unsafe” Register.

This would be too easy for website owners to turn off all their competitors.

So for IE9 to list this as unsafe site, your information will be checked first.

A number of examples for which the SmartScreen filter is used.

  1. Phishing – Screens threats from deceptive websites that wish to collect personal information such as user names, passwords and account information.
  2. Application Reputation – removes all unnecessary warnings for known files and give immediate warnings in risky downloads.
  3. Malware – helps prevent potentially harmful software on your PCs.
