Tracking Protection

“Tracking Protection” is a new feature in IE9, where you have privacy in your own hands when you are browsing.

Some content such as images, ads and analytics, which you see on websites that you visit are supplied by third-party websites.

This may be valuable content for you, but these third party sites are able to follow your browsing pattern across multiple sites.

“Tracking Protection” offers you additional control to the data that third-party websites basically can use to follow you when you are browsing.

FYI.
On the site www.Swotster.com, we do not track your browsing patterns.

With “Tracking Protection” you can decide which sites can receive information and follow you on the web.

By adding a list, you can block the web content that can affect your privacy.

When you add “Tracking Protection”, IE9 will prevent your data from being transmitted by data requests from websites. The list should be restricted.

For each list that you add, there is the setting for all pages and sites you visit and not just the pages you need from the list.

It remains active with each new browsing session until you de-activate the blockade.

In order to turn on “Tracking Protection” click the “Tools” (1) button, choose “Safety” (2) and click “Tracking Protection”(3).

In the dialog that opens, the “Tracking Protection” tab (1) is already selected.

A first list called “Your personalized list” has been added.

By Default it is disabled (2).

To turn it on click the “Enable” button (3).

And because we still have to adjust this list, select the list and click the link “Settings for this list” (4).

This opens the “Personalized tracking protection list” dialog.

At the top of this window we find a clear explanation of what the tracking protection can do.

Among them we find a list of “Content Providers” that had some data on sites you’ve visited.

You can set the number of times the providers are displayed.

You can select an individual site in the list, and click on “Block”, or you can check the “Automatically block” option.

This will prevent these providers from following or seeing certain information about your visit to the site.

Click the “OK” button when you’re done.

The most valuable options in “tracking protection” lie on the link “Get a Tracking protection list online”.

De-select your personal list, and click the link “Get a tracking protection list online”.

This opens a page with a number of lists, compiled by different companies who are interested in online privacy.

Each of these lists has an extensive description.

The authors of these lists are also responsible for maintaining this list.

You need to download a particular list that you want to add to your tracking list. For that you need to use the “Download” button that’s located next to each list.

This is all you need to do.

You can add as many lists you want.

ActiveX filtering

“ActiveX” is a technology that is built into many of the main websites to refine browsing.

It can be used for displaying animations, displaying certain files and video playback.

“ActiveX” can also cause certain security risks or slow down your computer.

“ActiveX filtering” in IE9 can help you decide on any ActiveX control that you use. ActiveX enables you to control all sites and also allows you to block and re-enable sites you trust. This way you are better protected from risky and unreliable ActiveX controls.

You can turn ActiveX filtering on or off by clicking on the “Tools” select “Safety” and click on “Active X-filtering”
