Type of files you can use

It is important to know what type of files you can use in Movie Maker, and I do not mean the type of video, picture and sound files as these files may have any extension.
To know this you can click the “Help” button in the menu bar (1).

This brings you to the online help page of Windows Live Movie Maker.
In the list of FAQs click the third question “What kind of files can I use in Movie Maker” (2).

Start a new project

When we have opened Movie Maker, it automatically opens with a new project where the storyboard (A) and the preview window (B) are empty.
To view pictures and / or videos to add to your storyboard click anywhere in the storyboard (1), or click the button “Add videos and phots” in the ribbon (2).
You can add videos and pictures by clicking in the storyboard only when the storyboard is empty.
You can add videos and pictures at any time by clicking the “Add Videos and photos” button in the ribbon.

Once you turn the knob or clicked on ths storyboard, it opens the panel “Photos and Videos”.
In this pane, navigate to the files you want to add to your storyboard and select it.

To select adjacent files (1) click the first file, hold the Shift key on your keyboard pressed and click the last file.
For non-adjacent files, click to select each file while holding the Ctrl key on your keyboard pressed.

Click the “Open” button when you’re done.
This places all files in the storyboard (1), and the first file in the preview window (2).

Attention!

If you remove or move files (1), you have added to your project, from the directory where you have selected them from, then it also removes them from the project (2).
This is because Movie Maker only refers to these files and these files are not actually insert into the project.
