Lesson 28: Color corrections (8)

28/84 Lessons

Levels

Another way to carry out color corrections is by means of the “levels”.  As an example I opened a picture for which there is a tint over the entire image. They call this a color cast.

When we open “Histogram” panel, you can see that the channels for “Green” and “Blue” have little or no highlights present (1) and in the channel “Red”, there are hardly any shadows (2).

We know from previous lessons that the value for each channel for the color white should be 255.

However, when we move on the picture with the eyedropper (3), we see in the “info” panel that the values ??for the white, with these values I still think it is white, are R: 253, G: 199, and B: 111 (4).

We can corerct these with “Levels”.

Open the “Adjustments” panel and click the “Levels” (5).

In the “Levels” panel, we see three pipettes.

The bottom one is for the highlights, the middle one is for the midrange and the upper one is for the shadows.

The first thing we do is, adjust the highlights, in other words, make the white, white.

Select the bottom dropper (1) and then a position it in a plcae in the photo (2) to be made white.

As you can see in the “Info” panel, the RGB values are adjusted 253-250-248.

In the right of the “Info” panel, we have the new values to the right the old values.

Do the same for the midrange.  Select the middle eyedropper and click a place in the photo that should have a gray value, or rather a medium tone. For example, the the space under the box.
Do the same for the shadows or dark colors.  Select the top dropper for a dark color and click it.
This would be the result.  Of course everything depends on what you have chosen as “Highlights”, “Midrange” and “Shadow”.

It looks a lot better, if I do say so myself.

What I still need to tell you is that when these operations are done for each color channel, you will have an even better result.

Just click the downward pointing arrow next to the RGB box, and repeat these operations separately for each channel, red, green, and blue.

Awesome!
