Lesson 48: “Charts” (2)

48/87 Lessons

Types of “Charts”

We can change the type of “Chart” at any time.

To do this, first select the “Chart”, and click the “Change Chart Type” group in the “Design” tab under the “Chart Tools”.

This opens the “Change Chart Type” dialog which is divided into two parts.

In the left part we find the different chart categories and on the right, the different chart types.

To select a type, select the “Chart” and click OK.

If you want to undo the changes you made, click the “Undo” button in the “Quick Access” toolbar.

Or click the “Change Chart Type” button again and make another choice.

There are many different types, so you can choose the one that best represents your data.

Flip Rows to Columns

Since “Excel 2007”, it has been made very easy for us to change rows to columns.

To do this we click the “Switch Row / Column” button in the “Design” tab under the “Chart Tools”.

Move “Chart” to a new “Worksheet”

By default, a “Chart” is an object placed in the same “Worksheet” along with the selected data.
We can move this to a new “Worksheet” by clicking on the “Move Chart” button in the “Design” tab under the “Chart Tools”.

This opens a dialog where we choose “New Worksheet”. We give the “Worksheet” a name, and click OK.

This places the “Chart” in its own “Worksheet”.

To change back, repeat steps. Alternatively you can choose the “Worksheet” by clicking the downward pointing arrow.

To move a “Chart” as an object in a “Worksheet”, move the mouse pointer over the edge of the “Chart”, to change it into a four-arrow, click and drag it to the desired position.

To change the dimensions of the “Chart”, click and drag the blocks at the edges or corners of the “Chart”.

Or, if you want to do it a little more accurately, choose the “Layout” tab under the “Chart Tools”.

Adding “Chart Title”

To add a “Chart Title”, we click the “Chart Title” in the “Layout” tab under the “Chart Tools”.

This opens a drop-down menu where we have three possibilities:
“None”: this is the default option where we can also use the previously introduced delete option.
“Centered Overlay title”: adds a title, without changing the size of the “Chart”.
“Above Chart”: inserts the title above the “Chart” but changes the size of the “Chart”.

By clicking on the bottom item “More Title Options”, we enter a whole number of settings for the layout of our title. Far too many to mention. Explore on your own

To change the text of the title, double-click on it and edit the title.

To confirm the new text, click outside the title.

Add “Axis Titles”

To add “Axis Titles”, we click the “Axis Titles” button in the “Layout” tab under the “Chart Tools”.

Here we have the choice of “Primary Horizontal Axis Title”, and “Primary Vertical Axis Title”.
Choosing “Primary Horizontal Axis Title” gives us two options, “None” and ” Title below Axis”.

Choosing “Primary Vertical Axis Title” gives us four options, “None”, “Rotated title”, “Vertical Title” and “Horizontal title”.
All of them are self explanatory. Try them out….

In both “Primary Horizontal Axis Title”, and “Primary Vertical Axis Title” cases we double-click the text to change them.

To confirm, we click outside the title.

Here we find the “More Title Options …” button where we can enter a whole number of settings for the layout of our title.
