What is “Joomla”

“Joomla” is a free content management system (CMS) with which we can build a website.
With “Joomla”, you can build and maintain a simple website, online, in your browser.
That means that you can manage your site from any PC .

The only requirement is that you need to be connected to the Internet, and that you have a login id and password.

How does “Joomla” work?

In “Joomla” we have a backend (back) and a front end (front).
The backend is accessible only to the administrators of the site. This can done by entering a password and logging in, and it contains the layout and content of the page.
Content that can be anything, such as, text, pictures, videos, features, etc.
The frontend is anything that a visitor sees, when he visits your site .

You now know the difference between the frontend and backend.
First, let’s install “Joomla” which is hosted in the rented space.

Installing “Joomla” (1)

In order to work with “Joomla”, we need four things.
They are, the “Joomla” software, a domain name, hosting space with a database and an ftp program to transfer the files from the server.
There are companies that offer “Joomla” which is already hosted on the server. In this case, you have no ftp program.
Even if you don’t have the ftp program, don’t worry, I’ll tell you how to complete the installation.

In order to install “Joomla”, we first need “Joomla”.
You can download the latest version for free from the site, www.joomla.org

Once “Joomla” is downloaded, unzip these files in a directory which you won’t forget so easily, such as, in a new folder on your desktop.

Then place all the files from the folder on the server with the ftp program.
Create a database on your server. If you don’t know how to do that, just ask your host, and it is done for you. This may take up to fifteen minutes.

The files are uploaded to the root directory of the server and the database which is created, eg. http://www.JouwAdres.be/installation.

On the first page of the installation, select the language of your choice and click “Next”.

The next window, “Pre-installation check”, checks the PHP installation on the server. Most of these checks are positive on servers that support “Joomla”.
Click on the “Next” button.

In the next window you need to accept the license agreement.
You have no other choice, but to click “Next”.

We will continue in the Next Lesson.
