Lesson 11: Moving Objects

The “Move / Copy” tool

We use the “Move / Copy” tool to move or copy objects in the drawing area.
It can be an object, the entire figure, but it can also be an edge, center point, or an endpoint.
In order to move an object, we use the same method as drawing a line, namely the
click – move – click method.

To move an object first select the “Move / Copy” tool, click the object, move the mouse pointer and when you have reached the position where you want to place the object, click it again.

With the tool “Move / Copy” is selected, point the mouse pointer on a plane, it will be filled with dots, you point it over an edge, it will change its color, put it on a midpoint or endpoint, then this is marked in a box and also changes the color.

If you wish to change the position of several objects do the following:

  1. First select all these objects with the Selection tool (with the Shift key on your keyboard pressed).
  2. Select the “Move” tool in the tool bar.
  3. Click once on any of the selected objects.
  4. Move the mouse pointer to the position where you’d like to place them.
  5. And click again.

To deselect one or more objects, click it again. To deselect all selected objects, click anywhere on a blank place in the drawing area.

When one or more edges are selected in addition to the surface, then the whole figure is moved.

A second way, and somewhat more accurate way, to move one or several objects is by means of the VCB-box.

First select one or more objects, you determine the direction by moving the mouse pointer, type the distance, in our case this is centimeters, click the Enter key on the object that you want to move.

For example, if youe want to move an object to left by 20cm on the horizontal axis, click the object and move the cursor to the left, or you can type 20 and click the Enter key.

You can always change this distance by typing an another number and click the Enter key until you are done.

If you want the object to the move in opposite direction, move the mouse pointer after the first click, then type a minus sign (-) before the number.

The distance that you typed is always calculated from the original position of the object.

In other words, you first type 20 and click the Enter key, type 30 and then click the Enter key, you will observe the object is not moved 50 cm, but only the distance of the last digit entered, in this case it’s 30cm.

In a figure, eg the circle in the image, click the edge of the circle, move the mouse pointer and click again when you’ve reached the desired position.

If you want to copy an object, such as the circle in the figure, hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard while you move it.
A Plus sign is shown to indicate that you are copying the figure.

If you wish to change the size of the circle, select one of the four end points of the circle, and drag it until you’ve reached the right size.
This is one of the reason that you should draw a circle whose radius is parallel to the blue or red axis.

If you want to rotate an object, click and drag the endpoint to the position you want (1).
To resize or change an object, click and drag the endpoint to the right size (2).
To change the size of the Arc, click and drag with the center of the arc (3).

And in order to copy an object, select the object first, hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard, and drag it to the desired location.
If you are copying an object, you see a plus sign over the pointer.
