Lesson 40: Group Box

“Group Box”

A “Group box” is another way to display options to the users of our database.
In the example below, the product type is a numeric field.
When a user needs to enter a new article, it will undoubtedly be a problem.
A solution to this is to make use of a “Group Box”.

First open the “Design View” of the “Form” for which you want to add a “Group box”.
We wish to use the wizard so, we first select the “Wizard controls” button in the “Ribbon”.
Click the “Group Box” button.
Click and drag in the “Form” where you want to place the “Group box”.

This opens the first window of the wizard.
In the first window, we give the labels of the different options that we want in the “Group box”.
Click “Next”.

In the second window of the wizard give, if you wish, a standard option for the “Group box”. If you opt for this, this option will always be selected in the “Group box” as a default.
I choose “No default option”.

In the third window you specify a value for each selection in your “Group box”.
By default, these are numbered 1, 2, 3 and so on, but you can change these numbers to another number.

These are the values that are stored in the field of the table, so the “data type” of this field has to accept numbers.
Click the “Next” button.

In the fourth window of the wizard we can choose the value of the selected option to store for later use, or store in a field.
I choose to store the value in the field “Type” and click the “Next” button.

In the next window, we select the “Control” that we want to use and the layout of this. An example of the choice is displayed on the left of the window.

Make your choice and click the “Next” button.

In the last window of the wizard, specify a name for the “Group box” and click the “Finish” button.
Click the “Form View” button in the “Ribbon”.
Now, when you add a new article and you select an option in the “Group box”, the corresponding number is automatically entered in the “Type”.
