Page Breaks

Word automatically starts a new page when it is filled with content.
If we look at our document in “Normal view”, we can see that a horizontal dotted line appear as borderline between two pages

“Page view” displays a new blank page
A page break cannot be removed mannually

But we can create a page creak in  text :

  • place the cursor at any position of the page where you want to enter a page break
  • press Control + Enter

We can move or remove a “Page Break” that we set ourselves.

  • select the dotted line and press the Delete key

As we already know Word performs a page break automatically when a page is full.
If we move a paragraph to the second page, the Word will also automatically update the next page break and the following pages are also updated.
The same applies to text that you add.
This is called “Background Pagination”

To create a title in the accompanying text we can input the page break before this happens:

  • select the text with the title
  • click on ‘Paragraph’ from the Format menu
  • Choose the ‘Line and Page Breaks’ tab

  • click in the “Keep with next” box under ‘Pagination’
  • the “widow or orphan” appears between the first two and last two lines when a page break is introduced.
  • If the paragraph is only three lines long, you can get the entire paragraph moved to the next page.
  • the option “Keep lines together” prevents a paragraph from being interrupted by a page break
  • click OK when the settings are set to your liking

Footnotes and Endnotes

Footnotes and endnotes are used to provide the reader some additional information.

  • place the cursor at the position where you want to insesrt a footnote or an endnote
  • click on “Insert” in the toolbar menu
  • select “Footnote”

  • choose whether you want to insert a footnote or endnote in the dialog box

Word selects Standard Automatic Footnote numbering. If you want to change this, click on ‘Options’ .

  • Word automatically goes to the bottom of the page
  • Type the additional information for the footnote or endnote
  • To return to the text in the document, choose the ‘Footnotes’ command  in the ‘View’ menu. When you mouse over the footnote or endnote, Word’97  will display the text in a note window.
  • We can see foot-and-endnotes in the Print Preview

If you choose to change the text for the footnote or endnote in subsequent pages, click on View menu and select “Footnotes”
You can also apply all the formatting options on the foot-and-endnotes.
