Macros

Macros enable us to automate actions and functions, which need to be typed and performed several times.

Create a macro:

  • Click on “Tools” menu
  • Select “Macro”
  • and click “Record New Macro”
  • “Macro Recording” dialog appears

  • Give a name to the macro: eg “letter”
  • We now have the choice to:
  • 1. Assign the macro to a button on a toolbar or
    2. To assign the macro to a shortcut key on our keyboard

Attention!

  • When you assign a macro to a keyboard shortcut, make sure that this shortcut is not in use by Word’97, otherwise it will be overwritten.
  • Macros that should be available in each document should be stored in “Normal”, standard format as proposed by Word’97
  • We choose to assign macro to a button on a toolbar, so that we can create macros instantly. Click on the “Toolbars” button
  • A dialog box appears
  • Select the “Toolbars” tab
  • and click “New”

  • We give the name “Macros” to the toolbar

  • An empty toolbar called “Macros” is created

  • Select the “Commands” tab

Click and drag the icon “Normal.NewMacros.letter” to the “Macros” toolbar

  • You can optionally change the icon:

  • and click Close
  • The “Stop Recording” button appears

All the actions that you perform on the screen are included

  • In our case we type an end for the ‘letter’:

“Sincerely,
Peter De Smet ”

  • Click “Stop Recording” after all the steps are performed on the document.
Every time we press the ‘letter’ button, the macro runs

If we want to add a new macro to our “Macros” toolbars, we go to the “Macros” toolbar first on which we perform all the steps, instead of creating the toolbar again.

Awesome!
