With the exception of a number of toolbars, we can only see a blank sheet of paper.
Here we find:

  • a vertical line (cursor)
  • a paragraph mark
  • a marking line (the horizontal line) that indicates the end of a file

In order to display the pictures optimally, we have customized toolbars with icons. You can learn how to customize the toolbars to your liking later during this course.

If you made a mistake while entering text on the screen, press the ‘Backspace’ key and type the correct text.
When a full line is typed, Word automatically jumps to the next line, and this is called “Carriage Return”.
The more lines you type, the more the file marker will slide down.
At the top we see the “Title Bar”, which refers to the program or document that is active. When you right click on the title bar, you will find a number of buttons:

wimage4les1_en Previous format

wimage5les1_enMaximize

wimage6les1_enClose

These commands can also be found if we click on the blue “W” that appears on the left of the Title Bar.
Under the title bar we find the “Menu”:

(File) (Edit) (View) (Insert) (format) (Tools) (Table) (Window) (Help)

Click on the menu name that you want to use to open it and click on the same to close it too. Follow the same procedure to select any of the options mentioned on the menu bar by sliding your mouse pointer over the options.

Below the menu bar, we find two toolbars:

(Standard toolbar)

wimage9les1_en

(Format toolbar)

Move the mouse pointer over the icons to the see the features.

You can also move the toolbars and menu bar by clicking and dragginb with the left mouse button on the dashes that appear on the left side of the toolbars.
You can put them back by clicking on the title bar and dragging it to its original position.

In case you accidently click on any button, you can always use the ‘Undo’ option.
This brings us back to the previous state.

Below the formatting Toolbar, we find the “Ruler”:

The dark grey areas denote the left and right margins, the light grey part indicates the width of the editing area.

At the bottom of the document we find the “Status bar”:

The Status Bar tells us more about the page on which we are currently working, the number of pages, the insertion point, and some active functions. Further explanation of these will be given later in this course.

Above the status bar, we find the horizontal scroll bar that allows you to access non-visible parts of your document. To the left of the horizontal scroll bar, you can see four buttons, and you can switch between the different views using these four buttons. (Normal view, online view, outline view, page view), we also find these options in the View menu.

Floating toolbars

Toolbars that are not on the edges of the screen are called Floating Toolbars.
Examples of these include the “Picture” toolbar and “Tables and Borders” toolbar.
Floating toolbars can be moved to any location on the worksheet, even under the ‘Standard’ toolbar by clicking and dragging them.

Tear-off menus

Some menus in Word’97 can be torn and these are called tear menus.
These tear menus have a grey bar on the top, we can separate them from the menu bar by clicking and dragging on the grey menu bar.
An example is the “AutoText” menu:

wimage15les1_en

-Click and drag the gray line on top of the menu, you get a floating menu.
-Even after tearing, the tear menu remains in its original position.
-To remove the floating menu, click on the close box.

Not all menus have the tear menu option, only those with a grey line above them can be torn off.

Animation

In Word, we find some nice menu animations.

  • click on the “Tools” menu (Tools) “Customize” (Customize)
  • select the “Options” (Options) tab
  • choose an animation in the “Menu animations” (Menu Animations)
  • click “Close” (close) in the dialog box

wimage17les1_en

  • try the different animations from here
  • you will not get any animation, if you set it to “None” (System Default)

Help menus

If you want help while working in Word, you can still get this through the Help menu in the menubar. Alternatively you can click on the “help” button on the toolbar. By clicking on the Help button you get some tips. You can get to know more about each button in the toolbar by clicking on ‘What is this ? and you can click on the black question mark if you want to know more information about that button. These are not added by default in the toolbar, we can see how to add them in Lesson 5.

In order to close the word document, click on “X” at the top right corner of the window or click on the “File” menu and select “Exit”. In the dialog box, click “Yes” to save changes.
