Highlighting “Layers”

In the previous lesson we saw how to group layers, and using this feature we bring in a bit of distinction in our image.

Another way to make a clear distinction between the different layers, is working with layer marks.

Double-click the layer in the “Layers” palette. This opens a “Layer Properties” window. Select the “Highlight in Layers palette” check box.
Click the color box and select a color in the dialog, “Color”.
Click the OK button in the “Color” dialog to close it.
Then click OK to close the “Layer Properties” dialog.

When you do this for each layer you link the different layers this way.

“Merge”

To merge layers into one layer, we have several options.

A first option is to merge the top layer with the one beneath it.
Select the top layer, click the “Layers” tab in the menu bar, select “Merge” in the drop-down menu, and click the “Merge Down” option.

This will merge the two layers into one.

If you have to merge multiple layers select the second option.
After merging, only one layer will be visible, and all the other layers will be invisible.

To make a layer visible or invisible, click the “Visibility Toggle” button next to the layer.

If you want all the merged layers to be visible, click the “Layers” tab in the menu bar, select “Merge” in the drop-down menu, and click the “Merge Visible” option.

The last option which groups the layers, is the “Merge Group” option. I think you will know how this is done.

Layer straightening

In Lesson 7 we had already seen how to straighten a picture, and in this lesson we’ll see how to straighten a layer.

First open the picture with the layer that must be straightened.
In this example we have used the building picture which we used in lesson 7, and we’ve taken a logo from the Internet. Now the picture with the logo is to be inserted in the photo of the building.

I will explain the process to you.
First open both pictures. Remove the background of the Volvo logo.
Click “Edit” in the menu bar and select the “Copy” option.
Select the second picture, which is of the building, click the “Edit” button in the menu bar and select the “Paste as new layer” option in the drop-down menu.

This places a new layer with the logo on the photo of the building.
Select this layer in the “Layers” palette and select the “Straighten” tool in the tool bar.
This places a line in the logo of the photo which has start and end points.
This is what we want to straighten.
Click “Apply” button, and the logo will automatically be straightened.

Awesome!
