Selecting with “Text” tool

The last tool with which we can make a selection is the “Text” tool.
Later, I will tell you more about the “Text” tool because now we’re talking about selections with the text tool, as we can also make a selection with it.

Select the “Text” tool in the tool bar.
In the options bar in the “Create as” section select the “Selection”.
Click in the image at the location where you want to place the text and in the dialog box that appears, enter the text.
Click the “Apply” button once you’re done.
The entered “Text” appears as a selection.
You can copy and paste it just like any other object.
We will see a little more explanation about this in the next topic.

Selection copying, pasting and moving

One of the reasons why we select certain parts, is that we can use them in another image, by copying and pasting.

Copying and pasting selected portions is like a piece of cake.

To copy the selected area, click the “Edit” button in the menu bar and select “Copy” from the drop-down menu.

To paste the selected area, click the “Edit” button in the menu bar and select from the following options in the drop-down menu:

  • “Paste as new image”
  • “Paste as a new layer”
  • “Paste as a new selection”
  • “Paste as transparent selection”
  • ‘Paste into Selection”
  • “Paste as new vector selection”

I think all this is clear.

To select an area we also have a number of options.
The first is the selection of the image and then clicking and dragging it to the required position.
However if you wish to select the precise area that is to be moved, use the arrow keys on your keyboard:

  • If you want to move the selection by 1 pixel , press once on the scroll button.
  • If you want to move the selection by 10 pixels, hold down the Ctrl key and press an arrow key.
  • If you wish to move the selection by 50 pixels, hold down the Shift key and press an arrow key.
  • If you wish to move the selection by 100 pixels, hold down the Shift and Ctrl key and press an arrow key.

To delete a selected image area or to copy or move it make sure that the “Selection” tool is active, set the “Match mode” to Replace and press the Alt key while you drag the selection.

Saving a Selection

If you have a complicated selection , and you want it to use later in other pictures it might be wise to save this selection or the selection area.

To save a selection, click the “Selections” tab in the menu bar, place your mouse pointer over the option “Load / Save Selection” and select “Save Selection to Disk”.

In the dialog that appears, give the selection a name and click the OK button.

To open the newly saved selection in any image, click the “Selections” tab in the menu bar, place your mouse pointer over the option “Selection Load / Save” and click the option “Load Selection from Disk”.

In the dialog that appears, click the arrow pointing downwards in the “Selection”.
Select the newly created field in the selection list, and click the “Load” button.

Awesome!
