“Patterns”

Let me first explain the difference between a “Pattern” and “Texture”, which is covered in the next section.

A”Pattern” is an image with specific colors and details. This color pattern can have options like a solid color or a gradient. You can select a “Pattern” and apply brush strokes with the paint tool.
For “Textures”, however, use the current style, eg. a solid color.
For example if you select the brick texture and foreground color as yellow, with each brush stroke you paint with the texture of yellow bricks. Let us see more about that in the next section.

To color with a pattern, select the option “Pattern” under “Style” (5).
You can click on the box 1 or 2 for the foreground and the edges, and 3 or 4 for the background and filling.
This opens the “Material Properties” dialog in which the “Pattern” tab is selected.
The “Pattern” tab has only two options, “Angle” and “Scale”.
Click the arrow next to “Current pattern” in the preview window to select a different pattern.
If you wish to add a pattern to a photo or any other picture, save your photo in the folder “Pattern” of the “Paint Shop Pro” program folder or in the folder “My Documents” – “My PSP Files” – “Patterns.”

“Textures”

We can use “Textures” on the current color, a gradient or a pattern, as well as foreground and background strokes or fills.
All you have to do is to select the “Texture” option in the “Material Properties” dialog, and select a “Texture” in the list.
We need to know how to open this dialog.

To create a picture and save it as a “Texture” , save it as a .Bmp file in the “Textures” folder of the ‘Paint Shop Pro” program folder or in the folder “My Documents” – “My PSP Files” – “Textures”.
The stored texture will be displayed in the drop-down “Texture” list.

Adding Samples

If you have a particular color, texture or pattern you want to use in the future, it is recommended to add it to the list of Materials (1).

Click the “Add to Swatches” button (2) at the bottom of the “Material Properties” dialog. Give it a name (3), and click the OK button.
The sample is added to the list of materials (4).
