Lesson 62: Layer Masks (6)

Layer Mask text

In Photoshop, we can also add a layer mask in the form of text.
We use the “Horizontal Type Mask” or “Vertical Type Mask” tools.
Attention! What you need to know is that you can not change this text later.
What we do is, we make a selection in the form of text, and make this selection into a layer mask. How to do this, I leave it to you.
As you can see I have two layers in the image, “color” layer and the “photo” layer, the upper layer is selected.
I click the text tool (1) in the tool bar and choose the underlying “Horizontal Type Mask” tool (2) as an example.
Then I choose a font, for example “Wide Latin” and set the width and height to a fairly large value (3), so that I have a readable text.
Of course, you can do what you want.

Then I click in the photo, and I type the text in the uppermost layer.
As you will see, the background will be colored red transparent, do not panic, this is how the tool is.
If you finished typing the text, click the “Commit any current edits” button in the options bar or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Enter on your keyboard.

This makes your text selection.

If you want to move the selection, choose the “Rectangular Marquee” tool (1), place the cursor in the selection and drag it to the desired position (2).
Click the “Add Layer Mask” button (3).

We saw in our last lesson that when we first make the selection and then click the “Add Layer Mask” button, the selected area will be white color in the layer mask.
So we need to reverse this (1).

The text is now a layer mask.

Awesome!
