Selecting Paths

When we work with the tool, “path”, we also place an anchor in our image.

Click twice, to create a straight line between two anchor points (1).
Click once, and then click and drag a second time, to make a curved line between two anchor points (2).

If you wish to edit a line between two anchor points, select the checkbox in the options window, and click anywhere on the line where you want to add another anchor point.
This gives you two levers (A and B) on the line which, you can edit by clicking and dragging.

If you wish to close the path, to close it and make it a selection, click the “Selection from Path” button (1) in the options window, or press the Enter key on your keyboard.
This makes a selection from your path.
The path remains present (2) in the Paths dialog (3).

I’ll discuss more about paths in the next lesson, but now you know already how to make a path a selection.

Foreground selection tool

The foreground selection tool makes a selection based on the color contrast.
Select this tool.
Then click and drag around the object you wish to select.
Press the Enter key on your keyboard when you’re done.

You can probably soften the edges in the options window.

We can specify the foreground portion.
Click and drag this over the object, which is a ladybird in this case.
You need not do everything in color, its just till GIMP has enough information to supplement the rest.

When you’re done, press the Enter key on your keyboard, and GIMP allows you to select what you want.

Awesome!
