Move

To move layers, selections or paths, to we use the “Move” tool (1).
Select the tool, or press the M key on your keyboard.

We have a number of options in the toolbox (2).
By default the option, “Layer” is selected (a).
However you wish to move a selection or path you can select those options.

Below this we have two check boxes.
With the first one, “Pick a layer or guide”, you can move any object in each layer.
With the second, “Move the active Layer”, yoiu can only move objects in the selected layer.

If the first option is selected and you move your mouse pointer over an object in the document window, it changes to a four-headed arrow (3) when this layer is selected in the Layers window.
However, you move your mouse pointer over an object in a layer that is not selected in the Layers window, the pointer also has a hand icon (4).
This is only to make it clear to you that the object you want to move, is not in the active layer.

Tips

  1. Keep the spacebar on your keyboard pressed when you want to move the entire document window.
  2. If you want an object to move only by 1 pixel, then use the arrows on your keyboard.
If you want it to move by 25 pixels, press the Shift key on your keyboard.

Grid:

Some of us want to use a grid for the different objects in the image.
To view it, click the “View” button in the menu bar and select “Show Grid” in the drop-down menu. Each square in the grid is 10 pixels by 10 pixels.

If you wish to automatically move the items to a particular position on a grid line, again click the “View” button in the menu bar and select “Snap to Grid” in the drop-down menu.
The grid need not be visible to use this option.

If you want the grid displayed in any document, click “Edit” in the menu bar and select “Preferences” from the drop-down menu.

Select the “View” tab and select the “Show Grid” option.

If you want to change the settings for the grid, select the “Default grid” option and change the default options. All seem quite clear and no further explanation is needed.

Rotate

With the “Rotate” tool, we can rotate a selection or a path, in the active layer.
Select this tool and click in the picture.
This opens the “Rotate” dialog.

This dialog allows you the to set the turning circle and the pivot.
The pivot point (1) can also be changed by clicking and moving it on the image.
You can make a selection by clicking and dragging in the image (2).
